Interesting my sister and I have been on azithromycin for years! (Possibly a decade or more)... and she started culturing mycobacterium abcessus as well. I wonder if this played a part in it.

I was on Azithromycin before I was diagnosed with NTM. They took me off the drug immediately when we got the lab results. I doctor said he wanted to reserve Azithro as a last result (I guess my mycrobacteria responses to Azithro).

They have taken me off all antibiotics unless I am doing a tune up.

I've been on zitho for better part of a decade, as with any med you have to plus and minuses, you take the good and bad. It's whats worst the lung infection(with non/zithro resistant) or mycobacterium related infection.

it is not just for CFers that are predisposed, anyone with a chronic lung condition is, I was on Zithro Daily, 250 for several years and just recently cultured MAC... My zithro was stopped immediately as well. I am seeing Infectious disease at the end of the month to see how they are going to treat it.

Interesting. The boys were on azithromycin years ago before they grew the weird myco. Recently our doctor mentioned not wanting to treat Jesse's reflux with erythromycin because of the drug family's connection to ntm. I'll have to question her next time we go in to clinic.

I hate to hear this. My son took Azithromycin for years and they suspected he had the mycobacterium (in addition to other bugs) when he died.<br>
