azithromycin

I've been taking 500 mg on MWF for about 5 months now and everytime I take one, I get EXTREMELY sick. I get really bad stomach cramps that will have me doubled over in pain and I get so nauseus that I'm drooling. I thought that by now my body would have adjusted to it and it wouldn't cause this pain. If I eat before I take it, I throw up whatever I ate (sorry TMI). I'm just wondering if the good really out weighs the bad with it?

I take mine last thing before going to bed. I've never had this problem. Maybe you are allergic to it? Let's see what others say.

1. try 250mg every day of the week instead of 500mg MWF.... many CF patients tolerate this better

2. try biaxin or erythromycin instead.

they're in the same class and have the same anti-inflammatory properties. whether they prevent PA colonies from communicating like azithro does, this has not been determined, BUT i think it's safe to assume since they're inthe same class it will have the same effect.

Many confuse allergy with side effects. Throwing up and getting nausiated is a side effect, not a macrolide allergy.

But this doesn't seem worth it, if you ask me - it's time to change to change dosing or something else all together

I was also on this dose a few weeks ago. I found that it was really rough on my stomach, diarheaa, gas...all that jazz. My doctor told me to go off of it for a awhile, since i'd been on a lot of abx constantly, to see if i could gain back my normal bacrteria. I havent gone back on the azithromycin, yet but I am hopng I can soon.

I agree with Amy...those symptoms are hard to deal with, but it doesnt sound like an allergy. Its worth it to try a different dose or something else, but I would call the dr.

Hope you feel better soon!

Wow thats weird. I take the same dose and I don't have that problem. You might be allergic to it. I would tell your doctor. You could try taking it with food, or taking it b/4 bed too.

Mark recently started on 250mg EVERY day because he couldn't remember the darn MWF thing. He seems to do well with this way, I realize that your problem is stomach pain, but maybe trying this might work?? I see amy suggested it too.

DS is on zithromax every day also. His doctor has most of his patients on the dose for everyday rather than MWF. Probably 'cuz they're like me and would forget.

When I had bronchitis last month and was put on a z-pack, I had similar symptoms the first day. I was dreaming about how badly my stomach hurt -- just laid their and cried Reminded me of being in labor. Figured it was because the first day you take two tablet and one a day afterward. I'd check with your doctor to see about going with the everyday lower dose. Hope you feel better.
