Only 3% of CFers have cepacia.
1.) what is B.Cepacia ? How can I prevent it? How do I know if I have it?
You can prevent it by adhering to cross-infection policies (3 feet away from other CFers in the waiting room, masks if you have a cough, and NOT hanging out with cepacia patients.) Also, don't eat soil <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> You know you have it by the results of a sputum culture.
Cenocepacia is the genomovar III, which is the most commonly occurring strain of cepacia. There are 9 types in all. I expect that once they find a solution for one, then the doors will open up to tackle the rest. In the meantime, the best available course of treatment is to hit cepacia with a combination of drugs. The synergistic effect works better (in most cases) than using a single antibiotic. Nonetheless, cepacia syndrome is still a threat.
Here's a list of the 9 types, some of which are more devastating than others.
genomovar I, B. cepacia
II, Burkholderia multivorans
III, B. cenocepacia
IV, B. stabilis
V, B. vietnamiensis
VI, Burkholderia dolosa
VII, B. ambifaria
VIII, Burkholderia anthina
IX, Burkholderia pyrrocinia
