When DS was diagnosed at birth, I looked at geneology's from both sides of the family. My mother had a brother who was stillborn -- that was it. And on my husband's side, my MIL had 3 cousins who died at a young age, but turned out it was a horrible household accident. On a side note, my mom just emailed me a geneology from her uncle -- my great uncle and it goes back to the netherlands a long long time (1400s) and what is amazing is the longevity. Whole long list of peope living into their late 80s. Wow!

Although I do know that my children are not the first generation to have CF, I just find the history of our family so interesting. Way back when, when little babies starved to death, possibly due to CF, sadly nursing moms usually took the brunt of the blame. I find it amazing that you can go back for many generations like Liza, and find no indication of CF on either side of the family. My parents have not themselves been tested to see which one carries the gene, and have always suspected that it was my mom because of her brother that died of the spastic colon at 2. But one of my cousins on my dads side is a known CF carrier. Sometimes I wonder if both parents carry the gene and my sister and I just got 'lucky' and didn't get both. Who knows, but I do find genetics very interesting (although I do wish my children and nephew didn't have CF of course!).

Christina, you certainly don't have to have a family member with CF in order to get it. The only thing that needs to happen is for a family member to be a carrier, and they have children with another carrier. It's all genetic. And even if two carriers have a child, there is only a 25% chance that the baby will have CF. It's all about carrier status. Mothers with CF will always make their child a carrier. There is no evidence of CF in any of my lineage. My brother and I are the first. We don't know how many of my family members are carriers though, like my parents.
