Hello Everyone,

I have not posted much but, I feel it is needed. I use to be a "track star" but I stopped and had many excuses why I couldn't or did not want to run. Last September (2009) I got the H1N1 flu and I was down for 6+ weeks. My PFTs went from FEV1 110% (aug 09, during exacerbation) to 91% (October 09, which was really low for me(end of swine flu)). I was a little worried but figured I would be fine. I always was, my numbers always came back up. WRONG...5 months later (this Monday) I went to clinic, feeling a little sick and SOB, not bad though and my FEV1 was 81% (lower than ever) and my weight down 15 pounds (since the last appt). That was the shock of my life. For the first time in MANY years, there were changes all over my x-ray...mucus plugging (little circles everywhere). Usually my lungs look normal.

I know I had been not so great about treatments and CPT. I am in a doctoral program and commute 75 miles one was and have 12 hour days at least 3 times a week, plus homework. There was no time to do homework or sleep let alone do treatments.

Yesterday, after a whole lot of praying I decided to take a leave of absence from school and focus on my health. I am on I.Vs and I will be running again. I am 32 and a mother and this was a huge reality check. I can not afford to let my numbers continue to decline, 29% points is a whole lot to lose in 5-6 months. No school, no work just me and my running shoes (nebbs and vest too). I have faith that I can turn this around and I know it is going to be really tough, I have asthma too and the air quality in the central valley (california) is terrible. I go back in June, lets see if I can make a difference in a couple months.

Thank you all

Amy,

Sounds like a solid plan. We'll be here cheering you on! The only thing you didn't touch on is how you plan to put on the weight. Try not to hit the junk food it could cause you to end up with CFRD and also negatively effect your lungs IMHO.

Stay positive!

Hey Amy,
I do think you can get most if not all of your LF back if you concentrate on your health above all else and don't let too much time pass until you get started. Obviously meds & airway clearance are essential, but heavy duty aerobic exercise is just as important and I think that is what is missing from a lot of people's regimens. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area where we have lots of pollution too, so I would suggest exercising in an air conditioned gym on polluted or hot days.

Hows your blood sugars? Could be a reason for your wieght lose?

If you are been doing this good not doing treatments, once you start I'm sure you will do fantastic. I can vary quite a bit, and i have gone down to 53 and was able to get it back up to 88. I'm around 70 now.

Do you culture anything? Maybe trying tobramycin or something if you culture pseudo might be a good idea too. Get the infection and the inflammation down.

Supps are great too. Make sure you are getting plenty of vitamins and antioxidants, again to fight inflammtion...

Good luck to you!
