How To Teach Proper Nutrition and Not Confuse CF Child?

Hi Gammaw,
Yeah, this is a tough one- we went through it, too. In fact, we still do because our kids' classmates will tell them directly that they aren't eating "healthy food." So we've had to do some educating both of our kids and the kids in class as well as the teachers. And our kids handle it well now because they are older and they are well educated on what their needs are.

So, I would talk with the teacher about this especially with the new section coming up. If it were me, I would volunteer to teach a little segment to the kids about CF and how different people have different bodies and different needs. But, you might not be comfortable with this so just talking with the teacher will hopefully take care of it.

The other important piece is to teach your little one about CF care and that some things about his body are different. At 4, he is old enough to understand this if presented simply. There are some good books for his age level which will help him to learn about CF and how to care for himself. Now is the perfect time to begin educating him about this.

Good luck on this. My website has some ideas and tips for teaching the class if you need them. www.TipsForCFParents.com under School Issues.

Take care, Lisa

Thank you so much for that link...the sample 504 plan has some really good ideas. I did one up when my little guy was in kindergarten but had not thought quite so thoroughly. I definitely need to include the attendance policy waiving because even though it has been discussed time and time again I ended up answering to a truancy officer after his hospital stay. (We have a new principal and she is lacking some common sense.) Luckily he hadn't had a hospital stay in 4 years prior to this last fall so I am crossing my fingers that he will make it quite some time again...but either way as we all know cfers miss more school than most kids. (It doesn't help that these kids are getting sent to school sick!) Anyway, thanks for the great link!

We used your site to draft a letter to the teacher, printed off the various guides for the school last year when DS started all day kindergarten. All kindergarteners in town go to the same school.

This year he starts first grade at an elementary school down the street. Plan to meet with the principal next week when we register and she indicated she'd already visited with DS' previous principal.

My primary concern last year and will be again this year is the enzyme issue. His teacher was able to adminster them to him so he didn't miss any class time, so hopefully it'll be the same.

We'll need to stress the bathroom issue and making sure he can go whenever need be. There's no longer a bathroom in the classroom.

And during cold and flu season stressing that they enforce their sick kids policy, proper handwashing, etc. Last year due to the H1N1 epidemic the school district was pretty good; however, things were a little stressful as there were parents who'd send their children to school after dosing them with tylenol and around 1 they'd suddenly get feverish again.

Lisa,

Thanks for all the great information!

We had Taylor's 504 meeting this week, so we are all set for school to start at the end of the month. Her teacher is on board with keeping her enzymes in the classroom, so she doesn't have to miss class time and go to the germy nurse's office (which is actually run by the office ladies, not a nurse) to get them 3 times a day. (morning snack, lunch, afternoon snack)
