Quoted as saying something and attributed with saying it are two entirely different things. You can't just say that the oldest person must've said it because no one from his time is still around to vouch for him and because people can just say that you said stuff that you didn't years after you die as long as everybody still knows who you are. Besides, its not the thinking behind the quote that is modern, its the grammar and wording. Ben Franklin talked all grandiose about democracy and liberty and alot of what he said had an old english tone to it. Mark twain spoke and wrote in a deep southern dialect and Einstein wouldn't want to say whimsical/metaphorical things for fear of being torn to shreds about it by his colleagues and critics. But I think its like Havoc said that noone will ever know who said it first. It will just have to remain one of life's little mysteries.

Rita Mae Brown wrote a book called Sudden Death in 1983, in which she paraphrased the quote. The earliest know print of the quote appeared in a 1981 Narcotics Anonymous pamphlet. It seems to have been a relatively well know quote, but we still don't know where it first originated. The exact verbiage of the quote doesn't help us date anything, as people will modernize sayings. We all know "buyer beware," but none of us says caveat emptor anymore (well, almost nobody). I'm not sure that you can say for certain that Mark Twain/Samuel Clemens' accent was "deep southern" considering he was born in Missouri and by age 21 he was working for newspapers all around the country. He certainly wrote in dialect, giving his books a more realistic tone for the setting of the story. Unfortunately, there are no known sound recordings of his voice. Similarly, the quote is neither a metaphor, nor is it whimsical. I don't think we can conclude Einstein avoided that phrase for fear of ridicule. It's certainly possible none of these people had anything to do with starting the phrase. It could have come from anywhere really. Sorry, Aquafish, for hijacking your thread. It's 6AM and I can't sleep. Being the inquisitive person I am, I felt I should research more and see if I could find out anything more specific than mere conjecture (since there's nothing better to do at 6AM).

Just wanted to second what MammaFirst said. We had a 1 1/2 with our son trying to figure it out. They had tested most everything and finally tried Flagile just to see if it worked. It was really a shoot in the dark, but it ended up helpingwith a ton of sy,ptons--addresses bacterial overgrowth. Being backed-up can cause bacterial overgrowth and then that worsens the constipation. Also, plain old milk of magnesia (sp?) with the miralax helped move things along too. fyi: Flagile is the worst, so be prepared.

With DS we usually start with Milk of Mag; however, a few years ago he had issues due to adhesions from his original surgery as a new born to repair a bowel obstruction. Slowed down digestion to the point that his enzymes weren't getting where they were supposed to, so he got backed up with stool, began vomiting.

After his surgery, he still had issues going again -- they tried golytely, gastrographin enemas, mucomyst and were just about ready to go back in to do exploratory surgery and he went. No issues since unless he eats a lot of peanuts, so we try to limit those to just a small amount once or twice a day.

Liza could I trouble you for some more info/insight? Our son did not have an obstruction at birth, but at 1.5 was hospitalized for DIOS (although they weren't sure it was that) and he always seems to have problems. He gets backed up and then vomits if he eats too much, gets too upset, etc. We've had two more rounds of Xrays one of which showed copious amounts of stole (which Milk of Magneisia cleared), and the second was fine but that was after 3 weeks of 3x a day miralax and 10ml of milk of magnesia for several days on/off. The flagile has seemed to get us back to ground zero and things "regular" but I guess I'm constantly worried about what's lurking. I try to give him macademia nuts a few times a week in things (probably about a full serving) and he has poop with nuts for several days after. GI said the nuts weren't an issue. Since he hasn't had a surgery like your DS, could he still be having issues with nuts do you think? Any other suggestions? Right now since we finished flagile and he was Xrayed right before that (and also had a barium enima) and GI did not see any back-ups, basically we are just trying to stay on top of poops with tweeking Miralax dose and then if a missed poop, doing Milk of Magnesia. Would love any input because this has been going on since about 9 months.

My 23 year old daughter is having some very serious issues as well with her stomach. Originally thought to be DIOS, the doctors now believe she has something else and we are in the midst of a lot of tests. She did have miconeium ileus at birth and had surgery and did not really have any problems until her mid to late teens. Now when an attack comes on it is so painful, the only thing that helps is a trip to emergency where they put her on morphine. She also throws up constantly and does take a long time to digest food. The doctors have said that she may have intususeption - anyone else out there have this problem???. They won't know until she has another attack and can do an ultrasound while she is having it. This is relatively rare but I'm hoping that someone out there has had this and can give me some insight.

Terri -Mom to 2 beautiful girls with CF.

Have they tried a course of Flagile? The backups I guess can cause the bacterial overgrowth and then the two together make it really hard to nail down. Our doctors did as last ditch stab after all the testing was negative including intreceptious (sp?) His symptons besides the constipation were watery stools, followed by pieces of stole, digestion soundsing like a drain clearing with Drano (think commerical), smelly breath, acid reflux/vomitting, pain almost instantly after eating, a stomach that balooned out and was horribly distented until he pooped. They also had done a barium enima, ultrasound and Xrays to check out if stole was an issue, as well as the various other causes.

No we have not tried Flagile - never even heard of it. I'll mention it to our GI doc and see what he says.
