Tobramycin is a class "D" drug, so it isn't the worst category but isn't reccomended, can you ask your Dr. if there is anything else you are sensitive to? Or maybe get your OB in on the discussion, they are likely to be even more cautious choosing medications.

Hi Jenny,

I would be feeling the same way as you if I were in the same position. But like everyone said, you are in the driver's seat and you should ask your doc if there's another alternative. I would also be very scared about using Tobra.

Keep us updated and good luck.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I really like the doctor I saw yesterday, but I feel like my normal doctor has much more empathy for me b/c she is a mom. I e-mailed my NP and explained my concerns and asked if there was any way to get in touch with my doctor and see what she thinks about this. I am 100% opposite of a confrontational person, so that was realllly hard for me to do, but this is just too important to me. I know that my health is important for the baby too, but like I said, I'd like to try to get better without the Tobra first, especially since I am also already doing Tobi.

i sympathize bc i am so bad w confrontation too-to the point where i'd rather be a punching bag that confront.

but now that i'm a mom, the one area where i will confront if need be is for my baby. you already are a mom-that little peanut is inside there and u are in charge of it.

as a parent, esp as a mom you are given natural instincts to help in situations. u have to listen to them. if you feel tobra isn't right for u or the baby then speak up.

it doesnt mean that it is a bad thing for everyone...but for you maybe its not the right thing. maybe everything would be fine w tobra, but if it means you are going to spend the rest of the preg in worry about effects it may have had then i wouldn't take it for that reason alone. stress and worry are awful during preg and they can even make a stressed and worried baby.

your doctor works for you...yes its a doctor but docs are wrong sometimes. get a 2nd opinion.

what baffles me is that there are many other abx u can take during preg-doesn't your doc know this? i don't know what you culture, but i culture everything (pseudo, b cep and mrsa) and I did need abx at point during preg. my doc didn't use tobra bc she felt it was unsafe and not worth the risk considering that there were plenty others i could use that were more safe. I did get a 2nd op and my ob and a pediatrician felt the same way.
this has been known about tobra for ages...this isn't new info.

bottom line-if it makes your doc annoyed or you uncomfortable for a few mintues to argue this...who cares if it is protecting you and your baby?

wanted to add-i get your point about not wanting to say..well, i read this on the internet, ect. i'd call an OB, and even another cf center or general doctor and explain the situation and say you're not sidestepping your doc, you just aren't comfortable with tobra. then when u go back to your cf doc, you have professional opinions and not internet theories. hey-call my doc for info, she'll give you tons of info on tobra. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
i'm sure they know more about tobra now and good docs could regulate levels, but i do have hearing damage from tobra and my cousin did it while pregnant and her son had minor defects from it. so, would you prob be fine...yes, but if you aren't comf with it, you should't do it. esp bc theres other drugs u can take. no offense to your doc, but he/she just may not know about the other ones out there.
