Bad rash from Bacrtim

I don't have CF, my kids do. BUT I am on a round of Bactrim for a sinus infection and I have this terrible skin rash from head to toe! I started getting that yesterday and it has progressively gotten worse. I have also had a bad headache behind my eyes for 4 days. I am quite positive this is a reaction to the Bactrim from what I have read.

What I am wondering is, I stopped taking it and am taking benedryl when possible...will this get better on its own? Or do I need to go to Urgent Care? I do not have insurance, the girls' pediatrician wrote the presciption for me during their appt.

It's all kinda freaking me out and I am itching like crazy when the benedryl is not kicked in, yet it makes me so sleepy <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif" border="0">(

Thanks for any advice <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif" border="0">)

Maybe a bath with baking soda... Isn't that what they used when we were kids when we got chicken pox. Is there a nurses line you could call?

If the Benadryl is not helping, you may need the ER- this particular abx is associated with some nasty reactions. Well, any drug can be, but this one in particular is not one to play around with if you think you are allergic to it.

I had an anaphylactic reaction to Bactrim that started as a skin rash I thought was due to a detergent or something (it didn't look that bad!) ...eventually it progressed to full body rash despite taking large doses of oral Benadryl; by the time my dh got me to the ER I was red from head to toe and my face and inside my mouth had started to swell. I needed epinephrine and iv Benadryl and steroids; and then a taper dose of oral steroids to take afterwards for about 10 days.

I hope you are OK... please let us know.
I'd call a nurse line or if you get any worse go to the ER.

Please please do go to the ER or urgent care. I had a similar reaction to Keflex and I ended up having a serious allergy to it, but after the rash started, it settled into my joints and I ran a fever for days until it got out of my system. Please don't take any more and immediately go see a doctor. They will be able to switch you to a different antibiotic with no trouble.
