Once you start getting a barrel chest, can you ever get rid of it?
 What causes it?  Just wondering.<br>

This lovely feature is caused by trapping of the air in the lungs. Mine changes according to my health. I actually have different style & size shirts to accomodate these changes. As of late it has been pretty good because my health is ok. You can definitely see a difference when I am having airway problems. WHat I dont know for sure, but would imagine is that as more lung damage occurs over time that it would be more difficult to not have the barrel chest. Tho I guess the same applies. If you can keep the airways open not allowing the air to get trapped....HMMM now I have myself wondering. Thats all I have to say about that!

forigve my ignorance... what does a barrel chest look like I mean I realize the name is descriptive, but I just can't picture it.

Anyone have any pics for an example?

A barrel chest is more pronounced when you have poor posture. Your shoulders go forward and your mid back is convex in shape. I believe from personal experience you can correct this with stretching out the back daily along with many shoulder stretches. I have seen an improvement with myself. I cannot tell when looking at my side in the mirror that I have a problem. WORK OUT

So when you get a transplant, this doesn't automatically improve w/o exercise?

I can tell that I have a barrel chest when buying bras. I buy extenders so the band isn't so tight around my ribs.
Also when I was younger & had to buy formal, tighter fitting dresses, those darned zippers would never zip around my rib cage!

To answer the original question....I don't know if it ever goes away, sorry I couldn't be of more help.

I have a barrel chest. It's gotten worse over the years now that i am more short of breath. My breathing feels more restricted when i sit up right. My ribcage is very wide, even when i sit up right. I do hope it gets better after my transplant.

You can see a recent picture of me where you cna see it very well on my blog

I personally have no idea what a barrell chest is? I could possibly have one and not even know it. Being on this forum is the how I learned about it. *shrugs*

edited to add: . Said of a person: having a large rounded chest or rib cage.
I googled it and got this, I don't think that I have this and I am not sure that any amount of exercise would help the structure of your rib cage. just my thoughts.

Hi Lynda

My chest size increased a lot because i gained weight but the barrel look does not appear noticeable to me. If I have any it is only enhances my chest prizes size lol
My back roundness went away with proper posture through exercise.
