Bek has Strep throat

On March 20th, I took Bek to the Children's Mercy Urgent Care Center. Turns out she had strep throat. They gave her a shot of penicillian in her butt and said she should be good to go. They said as lond as she wasn't running a temp, that she could return to school on Monday.

Well, her cough has increased yet again. I'd say she's about 50% abover her baseline. So last Tuesday I was able to collect a sputum sample from her and got it to the lab the next day. They called me just yesterday, Friday, and said she is STILL culturing Strep A! I thought penicillian was a cure all for everything!!! So she has been going to school all this time with strep! She is now on 500mg of Amoxicillian twice a day.

Is strep a normal bug that cfer's get frequently?? Also, she has had several ear infections, and now her hearing in her right ear has been affected. It could also be from the Vanc IV she was on for 3 weeks. Are ear aches and ear infections also a normal part of cf?? I know there is a bug in cfers that can cause ear infections, but she isn't culturing that bug.

I don't know that strep is necessarily a CF thing, but I do think that the antibiotics she needs to get rid of a typical kid strep is going to be more than what a nomral kid needs. A single shot of penicillian probably isn't enough considering all the long term antibiotics our kids do.

I have no idea about the ear stuff. I would think that if your kid has a lot of sinus mucous and fluid in the ears, that it would be thicker in a CFer so it would be easier to get infections in the ear as well.

Heather,

The first time Bek was in the hospital, her doc told us it was looking like she had a bug, typical to cf, that causes a lot of ear infections in kids. During the 3 1/2 months prior to her 1st stay, she had had 2 ear infections, so it was looking like he was on to something. Turns out she didn't culture positive for that particular bug. However, she has had 2 more ear infections since that initial stay. She is now going to be set up with an ENT.

As for the penicillin, maybe it just isn't going to be an antibiotic that will work for her.

I am very surprised that after the shot in the er she wasn't sent home with an oral abx for the strep! I have my doubts on how well a single shot of penicillin would knock strep out for *any* kid. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-frown.gif" border="0"> And as Heather pointed out, even if strep itself isn't a 'cf thing', our kids often need so many abx that she might need a higher dose than a typical kid would to get rid of it. CF could definitely contribute to more frequent ear infections, though, if she is having the CF-related upper respiratory infections and sinus infections that so often are the precursors to ear infections.

I'm so sorry she was sick for so long due to inadequate treatment in the first place! I hope she's feeling better soon.
