Belly Aches

Okay I need some advise of what to do for our oldest son Mason. He has a g button and has acid reflux. He was on Zantac for the reflux until he was about 4 and then they switched him to Prevacid.

When we went to the CF clinic about 4 months ago he was complaining of belly aches a lot and was in the bathroom more than he should have been. He was gaining good weight and the dose of his Creon 20 enzymes was checked and everything seemed to be good for those things. They decided that maybe the Prilosec was not working as well has it should have been b/c he had been on it for about 5 years. They switched him to Prevacid quick melts.

It seems like it was working in the beginning but lately he is complaining about the belly aches again. He is kind of a picky kid that eats like a bird. I don't know if this is actually an issue with reflux again or if it is b/c he is hungry and not really wanting to eat or b/c he only has certain things that he wants to eat. When we went to the store this weekend I told him to look at everything in every aisle and pick some different things to eat.

Please help me with what is possibly causing this. Thank goodness he has the g button so when he doesn't eat he is still getting all of his calories. Also the way that he takes the quick tabs is by putting it on his tongue and putting water in there and waiting for it to melt. I am not sure that this is making it as effective. Please help

We've had this problem too. Kayla is on Creon and Hannah is on Ultrase enzymes, and both girls take the Prevacid solutabs as well. I do believe that the Prevacid helps them tremedously b/c if they forget to take it one morning, they tell me that they are in a lot of pain by the time they get home from school. So they are pretty good at not 'forgetting' that medicine.

A few years ago Kayla was having terrible morning belly aches, so we (after discussions with CF dr.) tried taking 1/2 of the tablet in the morning and the other 1/2 in the evening. The idea was that by morning her previous day dose of Prevacid had worn off so much that she was waking up in pain. And splitting it up that way did help her a lot.

She has gone back to one a day doses, and seems to be doing ok with that now.

Both girls tend to get a lot of belly aches, and sometimes just having a little bathroom time helps. But sometimes I just have no idea what is causing the problem. I think that they have just learned to cope with them for the most part<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0">

This has always been my biggest issue is stomach. I have been on prevacid, nexium etc. you name it i have been on it.

You more or less have to learn to cope with most of it. I get upset stomach one to two time a month at least sometimes more. Sometimes they last a day sometimes 3 or 4.

My 8 year gets a decent amount of stomach aches too. When they first started happening about a year ago his CF team found a lump in his bowel of stuck poop, apprantly it can be a common CF thing he was put on medication to move it and after some time it went. He is now on Movicol half daily which is a mixture in water to help make passing bowel motions a little easier. he still occasionally gets blockages there but they tend not to worry him.

I have also found that by giving him a salt tablet to quickly swallow helps too and his pain goes away in a matter of minutes. I always wonder if maybe its a sign of dyhrdration and thats why the salt tablet works or maybe its just the placebo effect.

He also spends forever on the toilet 3 trips before school I am constantly waiting for him to finish - I try not to rush him, sont want to give the poor fella performance annxiety LOL!!
