Biopsy negetaive, going for sweat test, poop question

DS had the endoscopy and biopsy and it was negative for Celiac. So now the doctor has ordered the sweat test for Aug. 24th. I figure even if the sweat test comes back negative, I will ask for the blood test - full Ambry.

I still can't figure out DS's poop. I've kept a journal of food and bm habits and it makes no sense. One day he'll have a rather normal looking poop that sinks, and only one. The next he'll have 10 episodes of loose stools and/or diarrhea. He also has light green/yellow or dark green stools at times, those sink. Then he has orange loose stools that float. He is a vegetarian and he doesn't eat a lot of fat, except when he has cheese. He has the option of a pb&j sandwich at camp and he opts for just jelly and a salad! I'm starting to wonder if this could be IBS. Anyone else have any experience with constantly changing, sometimes normal, sometimes gross poops?

Depends upon what he's eating.

Cheese is high in fat, so if pancreatic insufficient, could cause loose stools that float, are greasy. Ditto with peanut butter.

DS doesn't need digestive enzymes when he eats fruit, drinks juice, popsicles, clear candy....

If DS has CF and is pancreatic insufficient, then the type of veg and it's cleanliness will also have an affect on poop.

In my experience, raw is worse. Dirty & difficult to digest. Natural flora on produce is nothing to *normal* people, but for CF, dirty lettuce (not washed properly) has amplified reactions. Like *food poisoning*. I won't eat raw when eating out; just cannot guarantee clean food.

Thanks Rataosk, I'm curious if he ate more cheese then maybe he would have more consistency with the floating stools. He just always seems to go for the low-fat foods and with FTT, that can't be good.

vbs420, good point on the produce, I hadn't really thought about that. I try to be good about washing produce and when I can find it (and afford to) I buy organic. However, we go out to eat about once a week, maybe that will have to stop.

Have you noticed what kind of affect foods like bread, spaghetti, pretzels, potatoes, dry cereal, etc. have on the stools? What about jelly or fruit gummy snacks? DS does eat eggs as well. Has anyone fed soy products, veggie meat, to their kids? How did that go over?

No issues with gummy bears/worms/fruit/fruit snacks or jelly. All clear foods, which don't require enzymes. If they're blue, might cause a color change, like the jolly rancher blue popscicle he had the other night.

DS eats pretzels, noodles, cereal and white bread as well. Not really an issue -- all are low fat; however, with the noodles I sneak in olive oil, so he needs enzymes with that as a meal.

Thanks again.

Geez, I hate to put him through any discomfort, but particularly for the fecal fat test, maybe I should feed him some extra fat. I imagine he won't be excreting much fat in his stool if he's barely eating any.

Hi there! Sounds like we are in the same boat as you. Stools float every single time my daughter goes. They always float, but they don't always look so ugly...sometimes the look healthy (but floating) and then two hours later she'll have a horrible, huge, foamy one, and then several hours later back to normal again...go figure! One fecal fat test came out positive for fat malabsorption, one came out negative. She had 3 colonoscopies (three significant bleeding episodes several years ago)and during the endoscopy part the doctor said the biopsy ruled out celiac's, as well as a blood test ruling it out. (Although, I still wonder, because relatives claim they are sensitive to wheat.)
Her sweat tests came out just under borderline (in the 30's). Just today I picked up paperwork for the Ambry amplified genetic test.
You'll have to let us know how the sweat test and genetic test come out. You have found a wonderful group of moms in this forum. I have been extremely thankful for their advice.
