Bird Flu

I know that there will eventually be a strain that will be horrific, like the flu of 1918 (correct me if I am wrong. with the date, my brain is a bit tired..) where millions died, whether we are ready for it remains to be seen. As far as the US goes, I don't think we are ready for it...I will take the necessary precautions, like I do with every winter season, get my flu shot, stay away from sick folks, good hygeine etc... If I do get this flu, it would be devastating as I live on a vent, my doc actually comes to my house if there is flu in her office, she doesn't want me exposed even though I have had the shot, but right now I am just going to live day to day. Let's just say that I am pretty isolated during the winter months when there are cold and or flu outbreaks. Hugs, Jenn <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I have listened to a few "experts" about this to find out if it is indeed a real threat. Basically the bird flu itself is not a threat. The problems come in when someone who has not had a flu vaccine like many people that are in contact with the sick birds. They "carry" the germs from the bird flu (after bein in firect contact with the contaminated birds) then they themselves get the human version of the flu & with the exposure to the bird flu created a new strain which is like a combination of the two & that combination is given to others. This is the "general" idea please dont hold me to the exact words! So until I heard this I wasnt worried. I figured like anything else unless U are directly exposed to the problem U are safe. With this.....that is not necessarily true. The did say that getting the flu shot will help, but since it would be a new strain the shot will only help so much. That is like any strain of the flu tho!

At one stage there were so many documentaries and news reports on the bird flu that I couldn't help but worry what I would do if an outbreak occured (I'd have to stick my girls in some kind of a bubble!). So I asked Mikayla's CF doctor what the implications are. He said that he was not even worried at this point because quarantine procedures are extremely good these days. He believes that a vaccine will be available soon enough - I guess he was so calm about the topic that he put my mind to rest for now.

Oprah's topic for today is the bird flu. She has an expert on the show to discuss it. I am going to watch.
