Medications that alter liver enzymes can reduce the effectiveness of the pill - there are two that I am aware of:
<b>Rifampin and St. John's Wort</b>
This clarification regarding meds and oral contraceptives is new within the past few years.
YAZ increases the excretion of sodium, something for CFers to be cautious about, I think.

Rifampin DEF affacted me in that way...and other ways. I dont remember exactly what happened, but I was unable to finish the dose.

I have also heard though, that if you use say the patch or the Nuvaring it doesnt interact as heavily with other meds. My CF doctor's office told me def not to use the pill, since it is fat soluble, which means it gets digested (i dont know exactly what that means), but it will be more likely to interact with abx and other pills. When you use the patch or the Nuvaring, it does not go through your digestive system so is less likely to interact. I have used both the patch and Nuvaring...I prefer the ring though, less worry about it falling off and I only have to replace it every three weeks.
