Birthday Coming up.... Family likes cake and ice cream

I developed diabetes a couple of years ago. My family members are big fans of birthday cake and lots of ice cream. I can't touch the stuff. I broke the rules right after my diagnosis and had a small piece of cake and paid dearly with totally messed up sugars. The next birthday there was no family celebration....no cake and no ice cream.
My birthday is coming up and my family will be in town. I know everyone will want to have cake and ice cream. I don't even like the taste of sweets anymore. Is it rude as the "birthday person" to not eat their own birthday cake?? I don't want to offend my mom or have my dad make a big scene because I refuse.
How do I keep the peace??

Ok, I'm not CFRD, but I don't like cake. I do like ice cream, however I get a birthday pie or some other item I like. I look at this way, its your birthday, you get to pick your "cake" (my kids and mom usally make some thing I like) you can still have cake and ice cream for your family. And if somebody wants to get huffy about it remind them its your birthday, your health, and if they don't like the fact that they can still eat cake and but your not going to direct them to a cfrd website. That being said i hope you have a GREAT birthday, enjoy time with your family, and whatever the hell you want!

there are some decent sugar-free cakes, ice creams, goodies out there. Would that be a viable alternative? You wouldnt need to tell people...... : )

Besides, if you dont like it, dont eat it!!!!! Not rude at all, if someone comments, just say you are trying to leave more for the people who really enjoy it.

Took the words right off my mouth Ed!
...My boyfriend doesn't have Diabetes or any other health issues & he doesn't like cake, cupcakes or even brownies! Glad I found that out early on before I almost baked him a whole cake!
I agree with Sara as well. I'm sure there are other tasty things out there without a ton of carbs/sugar. I personally don't have suggestions because I still treat myself to sweets with a ton of carbs every now & then. It's easy to calculate with my insulin pump. I have to check my glucose levels more often if I do that though.

I would eat a sugar free/reduced dessert and the others can have the regular stuff. Better yet, since you don't do cake, eat whatever makes you happy! You are after all, the birthday gal! Have a great day
