I would suggest trying to go gluten free first...check out my post as to why I believe gluten is such a culprit, especially with CF, to lots of stomach issues. It is not easy or cheap though, to eliminate gluten, especially when trying to keep to a high calorie diet.

Once you have been gluten free for a few months, you will probably notice if you are having issues with dairy too. I realized, I lied on last reply. We also do raw cheese. I eliminated regular cheese from the boys diet and their tummy aches went away. Then I reintroduced and their tummy aches come back. When I tried the raw cheese I got no complaints whatsoever and I was thankfully able to get some good protein and fat in them <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

good luck and blessings,

We are in the process (well at least in the research and learning phase) of trying to eliminate or at least substantially reduce grains (which would also make us gluten free) in our diets. Since I am the cook/shopper of the family and my husband is on board we are doing it all together. I am reading the book "Nourishing Traditions" and it is very eye opening. My son has absolutely horrible teeth and this is a last ditch effort to get him and the family healthier. It is going to be so hard though. We love pizza and pasta especially. I know there are gluten free alternatives but our goal isn't gluten - it is grains.

My point to this is I'm hoping it will improve my health as well - maybe reduce the bloating and improve my lung health.

Missa - we are lucky to have a great raw pastured milk dairy literally a few minutes from town - Organic Pastures. They sell at our whole foods and also at a local farmer's market. I'm picking up some raw butter and cheese today at the farmer's market. Maybe some raw milk too. I don't drink milk at all and the rest of my family are not huge milk drinkers - it goes bad so quickly that it isn't worth it most of the time. If you can get some raw *pastured* butter into your boys they may do ok and that is another source of good fat for them.

Oh Caroline, how I wish we had access to raw butter!!! We live on the Big Island and that kind of stuff just does not seem availabe. So we settle with organic butter, but I am sure it is not grass fed.
We do 1/2 goats milk and 1/2 rice milk for drinks at meal time. And I cook with coconuts milk for the boys. For me, I cook with 1/2 rice milk and 1/2 coconut milk as I do not need to be adding any more calories to my diet!!!

Good luck on going grain free!!! I don't think I would be able to keep the boys' weight up with that diet!!! I do have a really good brownie recipe, made with almond butter and no flour, which is out of this world!!

Praying that you see great results!!

blessings,
missa

Thanks Missa - I hope we can succeed with this change. Thankfully I have no weight issues so I don't have to worry about that.

I did a quick google search and found 1 dairy on the big island that sells raw milk - Milk and Honey Farm in Pahoa. I don't know where you live but maybe you can try there? Even if you don't want to drink the raw milk you could make your own butter from it. I have no idea if their cows are pastured but I'm guessing they are.

Another pastured butter is Kerry Irish Gold. They are not raw but it says on it pastured. I'm guessing that it probably isn't available in HI but you never know.

I have had this problem my entire life. I finally got fed up around 20 years old and went on the hunt to figure out what exactly was causing it. I saw a few different doctors over the years who couldn't figure it out (and I think maybe didn't quite believe me since I'm skinny) and finally found the right doctor.

He was a Gastroenterologist. He did a scope of my bowel and some other tests (can't remember as it was over 11 years ago) and found that food wasn't being processed at the right speed through my system. Slow emptying something or other.

Anyway, that doctor changed my life! I am on a drug called modulon and although I still have some bloating occasionally, most days my stomach remains flat.

If you look it up, it says modulon is prescribed for IBS.

Something to talk to your doctor about anyway. Good luck!
