Blood Clot in vein from Picc

I had a Picc line placed last Wednesday and it was the WORST line I've ever gotten (I've had about 15 or so). It was the first time they ever sutured it in place (horrible) and it wouldn't stop oozing/bleeding from the site. <div><br></div><div>I had it done in IR (interventional radiology) instead of bedside with the Picc team because I need some sedation due to anxiety. Worst decision ever. Anyway, a Picc team nurse came to change the dressing and look at it for me since I was concerned. She was not pleased with the way it looked. She cleaned it up best she could and put a stat lock on it (it was about 4-5 cm OUT with NO stat lock and only 1 suture directly AT the incision site). </div><div><br></div><div>Since I've never had a suture before I dont know where they are technically supposed to go, but I have seen Piccs sutured at the base of the picc through the 2 holes where a stat lock usually clicks in. </div><div><br></div><div>about 5 days later when my arm was still sore and increasingly sore I called the docs to take a look at it. After an U/S it showed I had a clot. We removed the Picc and 3 days later I had a follow up U/S. It grew. surprise surprise. It now goes from my elbow all the way up to my subclaviael vein near my collar bone. =\  </div><div><br></div><div>I have a hunch its from having the suture at the incision site that it would continually pull on the skin and make it bleed, which would then try to clot but then the process would repeat itself. </div><div><br></div><div>I guess my questions are:</div><div>Was that suture placement normal? Or was the young doctor who placed my picc as new as I thought he was. </div><div><br></div><div>Has anyone has a blood clott -- NOT IN YOU PICC ... my Picc was working fine!!-- in the vein with your picc in it? And did it go away? </div><div><br></div><div>Also, after you have a severe clot are you able to get Picc lines placed again? What about a port? Did anyone have a clot before they got a port? </div><div><br></div><div>PS I usually take extra Vitamin K (ontop of CF vitamins) because normally I DONT CLOT well . Ironic right? so this is just freaking me out because its so out of character for my body. </div><div><br></div><div><br></div>

Did they put you on AntiCoagluants?  I had a blood clot from a PICC placement back in March and it was minor but they still put me on blood thinners to get rid of the clot.  My PICC was also working fine, but my arm was still swollen and sore three days after the placement.  I would ask your doctor to put you on these meds.  My clot was gone within a week and a half.  I did not have sutures, but I had a horrible time with the placement.  They had a student working on me and it took about five tries before they went with an actual experienced doctor.  (I have nothing against students, but when you have had 20+ PICCs and are already a tough stick....students should not be working on you).  <div><br></div><div>And yes you can go back to another PICC.  I just got my first PICC since the clot, but they would not use the arm where the clot had been.  Although, I think at that point (mine and yours) it would be time to start thinking about a port.  I am starting to think about it because I am such a hard stick, but I am hopeful that I won't need IV abx for quite a long time and thus not need a port for even longer. </div>

I also was only sutured once, and it was in IR as well. At least it was in the correct place but was irritated and miserable the whole time. My other PICCs were all placed in my hospital room. They rarely went well for me, but none of them were anywhere near as bad as the one placed in IR.

My very first PICC line got infected and left me with a blood clot. It was in a superficial vein, so they left it alone to correct itself, but my arm was swollen and painful for days from the infection. They eventually used that arm again, but my blood clot wasn't anything like yours.

Hope that clot is resolved quickly!

I also once kept a line for over a year. It was a bit of a pain to mess with it daily but much better than getting another!

Really--I recommend the port. It was one of the best decisions I've ever made.

My port is in 10yrs now and it's the best thing I ever did I kept running high fevers after a few weeks with my picc's . I was soooooooooo upset to get it I thought ok this is the end of my road and now 10yrs later I know it was the best thing I did for myself. IT is s on the right side of my chest under my collar bone, it runs thru my juglar vein in my neck and with my age not very noticable it's very comfortable. I wld think the upper arm soft flesh it may not sit right? But I know alot of people on this sight have them in many different places. Good luck and give it some serious thought. Pat-56/CF
