I donated blood prior to be diagnosed w/ CF. After my diagnosis, I tried to donate again and they asked if I was on antibiotics...since I'm on zithromax MWF they said absolutely CANNOT donate. Since I'll always be on that, as well as possibly other antibiotics (which most CFers are) it's pretty safe to say no donating <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0">
The funny part of the story when I tried to donate the 2nd time (after being diagnosed) was that I talked my bf at the time into donating too...it was a, "well if you're doing it, i GUESS i'll do it" type thing. Turns out I couldn't, but he was all set up so he couldn't back out, and then passed out b/c he was so freaked out lol...oops

Interesting that some of you weren't allowed to donate due to CF. As far as I knew, the only problem the Red Cross would have with us is the antibiotic. Typically that lets me out, and now I do zithromax, so there's no way.
However, once when I was antibiotic free they did let me donate. I happened to mention it to my mother, and she was not happy with me, saying it could have a negative impact on my health.
Finally I asked my ID doctor her opinion, and she didn't think it was a good idea for me anyway.
I was contacted repeatedly after donating since my blood is O+, and they really wanted it. It made me sad as I like the idea of doing it because it seems like a way to help others with medical needs.
It doesn't matter now anyway since I have no windows of "antibiotic-free" time. I'm just surprised that some people were told they couldn't regardless of antibiotic issues. Perhaps that's been a development since I donated a number of years ago.

You should be able to donate plasma.

<br />If you are going to have any surgery, you should be able to have your own blood stored for use.
<br />
<br />Best bet is to ask at the Blood Drive location.

Ive tried to donate blood before and they have this HUGE book of all the different disorders and diseases that you cant donate blood if you have, CF is one of them. The lady told me that they havent done enough research about how our blood would affect someone else... for some reason our blood is different..? and it has a lot to do with the drugs were always on, it might affect the person receiving the drug. But, they still gave me OJ and cookies...lol

Well I tried to donate once a long time ago at a blood bank and was told that they were concerned that it wouldn't be good for ME, nothing about what harm it might have on someone else.
I think what Nicole was told was absolute BS and has nothing to do with rational medical science. Do they not realize that a lot of the "normal" people out in the community are CARRIERS of all kids of diseases. Shouldn't that processing exclude just about everyone? My husband donated blood every 6 weeks like clockwork when he had a schedule that allowed it. Since he's been working a 9-5 type job for the last 5 years he hasn't been able to donate as much. My dad donates whenever he gets the chance as well (and duh he is a carrier).
