blood in runny nose

Hi all,

My almost 14 month old has started to get a runny nose AGAIN and this time there is some blood in it. We do not have a humidifier in our home, and the air can get pretty dry. My husband actually said his nose has had a little blood in it too. I was just curious if any of your kids experience similar things, or if it something to be alarmed about. We go to clinic Tues. which I am dreading, but I guess I'll possibly get an answer as well.

My daughter (no CF) gets that in the winter when our heat is on. I had it while in the hospital. The dry forced hot air heat does a number on me. I was given saline spray to moisten the nose & I do use a cool mist humidifier for my daughter. She has allergies so that adds to it. Its not uncommon. What type of heat do you have? Hot air, hot water baseboard etc?

It happens with my son's nose as well. He gets those bloody streaked boogers. The dry heat does a number on our lips too.

My whole family gets it too. Drink LOTS of water and like Melissa said, use Saline Spray to keep your nasal membranes and sinuses hydrated. Sometimes we even coat the inside of our nostrils with vaseline.

Saline spray is your friend. I live in a very dry climate and it happens to me all the time, although more when it is really hot.

You know how your skin can dry out in winter from the cold and then the dry air indoors? Same for the nose. I would say a humidifier is a good idea, just staralize it EVERY day. I use a saline nose spray but the odds of a 14 month old doing it are pretty impossible.
