Blood in sputum

my 17 year old had one lugie with some streaking after jogging. His doctor looked at his last four cultures and he'd had pseud. aeriginosa in three of them, with oral antibiotics each time (and Tobi). My son got a PICC for two weeks of Timentin and Tobra. Doc said that blood is not normal and should never be ignored or accepted as normal. I means something everytime, you just have to figure it out. Injury from coughing or sign of plugging/infection? The antibiotics actually increased my son's cough and brought up all sorts of green junk that had been hiding behind some plugging! His pft's are way better, and we didn't even think they'd been too bad, before.

I had my first experience starting in June. Off and on a few teaspoons per day and antibiotics didn't change it. Doc instructed me to rest, no exercise and no vest for 24 hours after each episode. He kept saying not to worry about it unless at least 1/2 cup. I thought that meant collectively. However, when it happened 5 months later there was no question. It turned out to be almost 2 cups all at once while at the gym . After local emergency room visit which was a waste of time, I was transported to my Doc 2 hours away. Then I had a bronchial artery embolization by an intraventional radiologist. He embolized 2 arteries, and it made me quite sick the next day, but then I was good as new. I've only had 1 streaking episode since. I got some Gotu Kola herbal remedy I read about on this forum and I think it is helping. It is supposed to strengthen veins.
Good Luck. I hope you don't have to experience a massive hemoptis like I did.

After the holidays, I think I am going on and setting up for a planned admission. I did two weeks of oral antibiotics and I think that it just wasn't enough. Guess I will need 2 weeks of IV therapy. Its been 6 months so I guess I am due.

A wonderful/nurse friend of ours told my daughter (30 yrs old) to find out what your doctor considers dangerous then measure it every time. It's amazing how little blood there really is when it's measured. This has helped my daughter
feel alot less stressed every time is happens.

She also recommended not coughing into a white wash cloth or towel. She said that red blood on something white looks
sooo much worse than it probably is. Cough into something dark, but always measure it.

Hope this helps.

One time I coughed out strait bright red blood, probably about 1/4 cup. Then it stopped suddenly and I went back to sleep. It happened for 4-5 days in a row. I didn't have insurance at the time and only last about 2-3min each time then stopped cold with no trace of blood. Then it didn't happen for another year. I have never done anything special about it. I told the docs he said yeah that's a little much but you're okay so?? Kind of odd... I had a "Low-grade hemoptysis last week they gave me a script for 30x5mg mephyton incase I need it. Cool story bro.

Hi Guys,

My partner has had lung bleeds for roughly 10 years. It varies from slight streaks to a cup of bright red blood. I dont claim to know a great deal about this but after spending many nights in emergency only to be sent home again we have been given some helpful pointers from the CF team:

- If its over 120mls ring the hospital and come in
- if its between 60-120mls contact the CF team the next day
- take 2 tranexamic acid tablets stright away and continue the dose until the bleeding stops.

Lung bleeds can be scary and they are usually at the most unfortunate times in our regard but we have been told they are just another part of CF.

My partner has had 2 ebolisations for this, both have not stopped the bleeding yet but recently he read about a study in Israel where they have been using Tranexamic acid nebulised when a bleed happens. My partner asked to try this and his CF team agreed. So the past two weeks when he has had a lung bleed he has nebulised the acid and it stopped the bleeding pretty quickly...in comparison to a normal bleed without it.

I hope this has helped. If anyone does want to talk bleeds we are very very seasoned in them if you would like a chat
