Blood streaked mucus?

I have had 2 full on bleeds before but that was right when I was diagnosed about 14 years ago! Nothing since then.

I started Tobi 2 weeks ago and started prednisone this morning as well. I am also on pulmozyme, HTS, and doxycyclene for what we think was an infection.

Today when I have been coughing I have had blood streaked in the mucus I cough up. Is this something I should worry about-does it happen to everyone? This morning the mucus had a pink shade to it as well.

I am assuming it is the Tobi-since that is the newest drug? I think I will call my clinic tomorrow just to let them know what is going on so I don't freak myself out!

Whenever Emily is sick she has pink/reddish streaks in the mucus she coughs up. It's erratic though, and doesn't seem connected to any particular med she takes. Her dr knows about it and it's part of her 'normal' sick presentation. We're to call if it ever gets worse or if we see real, bright red blood.

Streaking is pretty common during infections, even in those of us who aren't really bleeders. A lot of it has to do with inflammation and irritation of the lungs. Also, have you been increasing your airway clearance as well due to illness? If so, that can also cause streaks (or so I've been told).

I always let my doc know if I cough up any real blood, but I won't necessarily call her about streaking unless it's in conjunction with some other symptoms. In your case I would call the clinic and get advice, since it sounds like this is new and out of the ordinary for you, but rest assured that it's probably not going to be a major issue. As for the new drug theory, it's definitely a possibility - just know that lots of us experience this kind of thing without it being related to drugs at all.

Good luck!

well of course I would mention it to your doctor, especially if you are not on IV's maybe its warranted.

My 0.02 is if you are on prednisone it is probably opening some things up and your cough is bringing with it some older stuff and i.e streaks but this would be dependant on your mucous which I obviously dont know about. My old doc described it like this....once the stuff has sat in there a while (especially since I have bronchiectasis to a pretty good degree)it gets thicker and sometimes dries out and sticks. Once you finally get that moving it can bring with it a bit of skin especially in parts of you airway that are compromised by being thinner due to bronciectasis.
