Blood streaked sputem

I was just wondering what does it mean if you cough up blood streaked sputem.

My daughter coughed up a bit of (clear) phlem sp? the other day and it had little streaks of blood through it.

It has not happened again, although she has developed a bit of cough which only lasts up to about lunchtime and then its gone for the rest of the day. Wierd, i know.

Has it happened to any cf child you have or might know of and what could it mean?

Any thoughts/info would be great!

Well it could really mean anything. Something from sinuses/allergies acting up to an infection to some type of over exertion. Given the age of your little one I would think maybe allergies or an infection.

It might not be anything to worry about, but I would contact the doctor. ESPECIALLY if it happens again or is worse since its the first time. For me & I know many others who have a history of hemoptysis, we learn to tell the difference of the triggers for the most part.


Do you use Vitamin K? That is often prescribed for CFers since it is one that we dont absorb yet its needed for blood clotting?

Ususally when Jess coughs a bit of blood it is just from either coughing so much and /or bringing, up some older thicker mucus tearing the lining. It usually last one treatment time and is fine after that. We do hold off on air way clearence for 12-24 hours. She still does breathing treatment though. If it continues the next treatment or more than a couple of tablespoons of pure blood is coughed up she may need to be seen by her Dr.

Daychele, thanks for your reply. My dd has not been coughing much at all, so i dont think that has anything to do with this particular episode.
She coughs about 3-4times a day and her cough doesnt sound too bad, at the moment.
