Blood Sugars

oh I forgot to add that Yes if you are sick and on IV meds that could be contributing to the increased levels. When we are sick our blood sugar will increase some - sometimes a lot and sometimes slightly. It depends on what meds you are on but if they are meds known to increase blood sugar or if the meds are mixed in dextrose then it is completely possible that the elevated levels are due to the IV meds.

Actually come to think of it since you are on IVs when was the last IV you had before the GTT? How many hours or what have you? Also was that IV med mixed in Dextrose? If it was and you took it only a short while before your GTT that could explain why your sugar was 145 for the first reading even though you were fasting. For diabetics all I can recommend is that you ask for your IV meds to be mixed in Saline and to double check that they are mixed in saline BEFORE they hook you up to them. I had that mistake happen on several occasions and I always ended up ill and tosing my cookies cause my sugar was too elevated.

Anywho I will stop now.

Funny thing is for me my doc started my right away on insulin when my sugars were spiking just over 200 and over 120. I think compared to others those highs are not really high at all but my doctor is SUPER proactive and wants me to be actually under 120 after eating. My diabetes dr. says 120 is hard to do and we shoot for under 140. But since starting insulin, I was on the pill, I can easily be under 120 after eating.

Anyone else think this is too proactive?

I get lows too now that I started insulin.

Any opinions are welcomed

I was 600+ (the meter refused to register more specifically, lol, and just told me that) when I was in the hospital and diagnosed. my A1C (the blood test that tells you how you've controlled your sugars in the past 3 months) was 11.1...normal is 5-6.5 i believe... anyways, mine's down to 7.1.

Jennifer- I personally think that is definitly 'proactive'...but it seems like i'm on the other end of the spectrum...ie my dr. never even mentioned diabetes before i was diagnosed, i was barely aware that it was common in CFers. when im at 140, i only feel a little 'high' but anywhere from 90-120 is perfect for me. just make sure you watch your lows!! good luck <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Hey Jennifer.

I just wanted to say that I think your doc was proactive but I think it is great and I wish that I had gotten the same thing when I was first having issues and diagnosed. It would have saved me alot of unnecessary hardship with my health.

I say just carry a snack and keep an eye on those lows. Also to say - you are technically considered diabetic when your fasting blood sugar is over 120-140 (I can't remember the exact value it is one of the 2 though) and your nonfasting blood glucose is over 200. So technically your doc wasn't really proactive in the diagnosis and treatment I suppose. I know for me I would have been on insulin sooner if they had listened to me when I said there was a problem instead of just assuming my weight loss was related to an eating disorder (which I did NOT have lol.).

Take Care,
Lindsey
