Blood-tinged boogers in CF toddler

Don't know if this is a reason for concern or not. Every now and again Thomas will have a bloody booger or two (not a bloody nose). We've seen this when using the nasal aspirator regularly, but we haven't been. This happened yesterday so it's back on our minds.

We'd be inclined to pass it off as a response to the dry weather, but because of CF we want to be on top of it if it's a sinus issue. No fever, no infection that we're aware of.

Your thoughts?

Sensitive tissue in the nasal passages -- sometimes when you're using the booger sucker on a regular basis things get irritated, possibly nicked from the aspirator and causes a little blood. I'd be more concerned if the boogers themselves are yellowish. Could just be the drier weather. Do you use saline, too?

We do use the 'little noses' saline solution before bed, but the booger sucker only when he's stuffy. No yellow ones (though hard to tell w/the blood mixed). Wondered also if pulmozyme might cause extra sensitivity in nasal passages as we use it 2x daily when he's coughing.

We do the same with DS -- though I've switched to Simply Saline -- compressed air nasal spray 'cuz sometimes the saline bottle would act like a bulb syringe and suck the boogies back into the bottle. Bleah!

I notice when we start tobi ds tends to get stuffier. He's on pulmozyme once a day.

Could very well be the drier weather.

I will say that when we found out he had a leaf up his nose for over 3 weeks, I was pleasantly surprised the leaf was still intact, no sign of infection. Must be doing something right <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
