Boiling treatment parts

Hi! I use PARI nebs for all my meds and I was just curious how ya'll clean your nebs and what you've found to work best? We have very hard water and I've lately been using hot soapy water with a baby's bottle brush to scrub inside. Is this o.k. to do? Also, I stick them in the dishwasher whenever possible (I hate acutally DOING dishes!)

Also, how often do ya'll boil your treatment parts to disinfect them?

Thank you for your comments/suggestions.

I'm really bad at boiling them as they say to do. I usually rinse them in very hot water and air dry on a towel. That's it . Once in a while I'll throw them in the dishwasher. But I also have mine labeled so I use this one for Tobi, This one for Pulmozyme and another one for Duoneb. So I do not cross cantaminate w/ different meds. I do have to start cleaning them better though. Eva

Hi...My daughters also use the Peri nebs and we almost always put them in the dishwasher. I also have very hard water and used to get so frustrated because stuff would build up in the bottom of tubes and we'd put the medicine in, hook it all up and no medicine would come out because they were all stopped up. I finally found a product called LemiShine at Walmart and it seems to be helping. It goes in the dishwasher with the normal detergent. It is amazing the difference in my glasses and silverware and so far seems to be helping the breathing treatment tubes also. I was told at the CF Center that as long as they go thru the dishwasher there is no need to boil them because the water in the dishwasher is hot enough to sterilize them...but if you hand wash them they do need to be boiled from time to time (hope this is true as that's what I've been doing)...

Hi Sonia,
We also use PARI nebs for our daughter and once a day I throw them all in and boil them for 10 minutes. I then airdry them on clean paper towel. I actually find this very easy. Once in a while they get "cloudy" looking and then I soak them for an hour in white vinegar and water) which also disinfects.

I just put mine ( just them, no dishes)in the dishwasher and put in some dish soap and vinegar. I used to boil mine until they started to get ruined from doing it too much. They would get all out of shape sometimes and i had to throw them away.

I used to put mine in boiling water but not anymore as it totally destroyed them. I just use very Hot tap water and rinse with washing up liquid and air dry on a paper towel. I use a seperate one for my Tobi, pulmozyme and albuterol.
Take care!

Wow, I've always washed all my stuff in vinegar once a week, but if that's not necessary and all I need to do is to boil them, that would be so nice! The vinegar stinks up my college dorm room terribly...I can hardly stand it! I'll have to be sure and ask next time I go to clinic, thanks for letting me know to ask!

I boil mine about once a week, but don't think that's often enough. I use the dishwasher too for most cleanings, but my doc said you have to check with your dishwasher manufacturer/specifics as to how hot your water gets in order to consider it disinfecting. I'm in an apartment, and have opened my dishwasher mid-cycle before and the water was hot, but not boiling hot, so I boil them to be on the safe side.

use hot water and vineger to clean them just drop them in a bowl, pot and let them sit for awhile and then put them on a clean towel or something and cover them and let them dry, it also helps kill grems ,and if you need to use one right after cleaning, shack out the water and use it the doctors told me to use vineger on my daughters nebs and it work fine Take care Babyfacedian@aol.com

The Cystic fibrosis foundations have recommended that vinegar alone is not strong enough to kill the germs that are harmful to people with CF. The recommended way is boiling for 10 minutes. It is recommended to be sterilized on a daily basis. Between the mositure and the sticky medication, our very own nebulizer equipment are breading grounds for bacteria

To the last poster,
Do you rinse them after soaking them in the soapy water or just transfer them directly to the boil? Any steps I can cut would be great! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Great topic! I boil mine for about 10 minutes with a bit (teaspoon or so) of vinegar in the water, it helps prevent the build up, I think that is what others are refering to. Sorry, but the idea of the dishwasher just turns my stomach, to think of any food particles being in the dishwasher and having them be near to my PARI frightens me. For those who have boiled nebs and they have deformed, that shouldn't be with the PARI, I have melted a couple from walking away while all the water evaporated - left the house came back, had forgotten, what a mess and the smell the worst ever. But as far as I know the PARI's should not deform, in boiling water.

I've never boiled mine. I just soak them overnight in really hot water with dish soap, and then rinse them with very hot water the next day when I'm ready to use them.
