Bone Density Question

Wondering what other people's bone density levels are. Since this is part of the natural degenerative process with cf because of malnutrition, how are other people's bones doing? Mine has slowly lowered over the years, and then last year the density jumped even lower. Now I'm taking calcium (not tums anymore...thank you to who ever that was), so hopefully in a year my bones will get better.

Does everybody deal with this at their annual evaluation?

I had a bone density done shortly after my daughter was born. I dont remember details except that the doctor was surprised at the minimal deteriation. Starting this year (I have the prescription, just need to do it), my doctor would like me to have it done annually along with my other annual stuff. She also wants me on Calcium, but that is something else I havent started yet. No excuse.....

I know my hip is on the "low side of normal" and my lower spine is at normal... from last year my spine actually went up a tiny bit and the hip remained the same

I just read there's a high risk for osteopenia if you have scoliosis. Jo, do you have scoliosis too? Did Ry also have scoliosis? How common is scoliosis with CF, anyone know? I've never heard of osteopenia before, but I know I have scoliosis plus the bone density deterioration and no one has told me to take anything other than calcium.

Osteopenia is like the step before osteoporosis, as I understand it. Same thing though, just osetopenia is to a lesser degree. And yes, Ry had really mild scoliosis, but still scoliosis. He was a mess, by his own admission lol.

Hmm...I went for a bone density scan when I was 18, and the docs found no problems. I haven't been since. I'm not even sure how often someone should be going for this scan.

Hi,

my last scan was about 3 years ago and very good. As over 70 % of adult CFers get osteoporosis I do take extra calcium (500 mg) each day since years and I do also take ADEKs which contain Vitamin D.
