Bone Density Question

I had a bone scan last October or so. It was a free health check from the city I live in. The wife took me there, and we both had our bone density checked, along with teeth, stress level (I was a basket-case by then), and free consultation with a surgeon for my shoulder (who said at this time, getting surgery might be worse than if it were done right away!!).
My bone density was actually just a little below the norm for my age, and I also was given calcium to improve it. The wife actually was giving me calcium way before that, anyway!
Considering my shoulder injury, I thought I would have broken the collar bone, rather than sever the tendon connecting it (at least by breaking the collar bone, I'd get surgery done on it!! And, either way it'd probably hurt the same!)
But my major concern was in regards to how my joints were hurting, and I thought that was malnutrition-related, and perhaps a lack of calcium, among other important nurishments. My knees still hurt, but I think there's a slight improvement.

Amy,

Where did you get that number of chance of dying 50 percent for a broken hip? Do you have research or something I can read I am just curious, I have many, many patients with broken hips and I think very few of them died, and mostly it was post surgery.. months later from hospital aquired pneumonia. but it could just be that I am not aware once they leave the hospital.

I am really into research, and statistics .. I would love to read it....

Thanks

I have osteoporosis of the hips and spine, my wrists are actually larger then the norm. I think it is starting to improve a great deal now that I take Vitamin D....

I have to have a bone density test every year for my "annual" insurance evaluation. They require it.

I have heard that you can increase the density by calcium and excercise, but more so just calcium supplements. (Hi Amy! )

Does any one here have scoliosis (curving of the spine)?

my doctor would like me to start getting a bone scan once a year or so. my last scan, recently, showed osteopenia, but almost all of my numbers were better than my last scan 3 years ago.

i attribute the increase to my exercise routine i've established and stuck to for the last few years...i also do yoga once a week as my usual routine doesn't include much "weight bearing" stuff. my doctors told me this does a lot for increasing bone mass.

also, for the last nine months or so i have been taking 1500mg of calcium a day.

I had a bone scan last year after asking for it (all my docs said something about but no one would do one). I found out I had Osteoporosis in my spine, Osteopenia in my hip, overall high risk of fractures. I tried Actonel and Boniva and I had bad reactions to both. I am now on a daily injection for the next 22 months called Forteo. My next annual scan is in August I believe, so I'll see how the medicine is working.

And I'm suppose to excercise, but I have a hard time getting motivated (any ideas on how?)

I had my first dexascan (bone density scan) in December. They said I have great bone density - no signs of any osteo. Mainly they said it is good to do it at this age to have a baseline. I plan to have one every 5 years as long as things look 'normal' and good. As soon as any change is noticed I'll bump it up to 1 ea. yr.

I have scoliosis and osteoporosis. when I went for my first scan there were a bunch of little old ladies in the waiting room and I'm pretty sure they thought I was lost.

Amy: Why did you refuse fosomax? Something I should be worried about?
