Boogers! DS was so proud

DS was very concerned yesterday that he'd have to get a shot or have a blood draw at his well child peds/local CF doctor's appointment yesterday. Despite my assurances otherwise he kept asking. I finally said, "well you will have to have a throat culture".

So complete with nasty loogie sound effects, he announces to his daycare director "M, I'm gonna cough up a HUGE Booger" Then the same at the registration desk. To the nurse who checked us in. To the doctor. And to his dad when we got home.

So with my lovely mucus phobia, I got to hold the jar. The nurse got so grossed out she left the room.

I did mention to the doctor when he said to let him try it, that it'd most likely be from his nose as he has a headcold, but he thought it'd be okay as they still use the cotton swab to stimulate the cough/gag reflex.

So we'll see what if anything grows out of this. Last time it was two different strains of Steno. Malophila and an odd water bug known as Brevundimonas diminuta.

LOL, Max cracks me up. I can just see the daycare director's face, picturing him depositing said boogers somewhere she'd have to be cleaning it up.

Do they treat steno. malt or is that one they only worry about if symptomatic?

eta> Emily has been surprised one too many times with unexpected blood draws and shots when she wasn't 'supposed' to be getting any. I suspect the same to be true for Max. Only being told by someone wearing a white coat and a stethoscope will convince her that she will not, in fact, be getting a shot/labs.

The local clinic wasn't going to treat the steno malt -- he cultured it first at age 5 -- they don't normally treat it. His primary cf doctor prescribed septra and we noticed that his odd, dry throat clearing "habit" disappeared. It was gone for awhile and made a reappearance albeit a different strain in June. So we'll see what appears this time.

Boys and their bodily treasures!

When Andrew was young and having one of those days when he just did not want to huff effectively after his vest I could ALWAYS talk him into it by challenging him to cough up something that would really gross his sister out! Worked every time!

Good job Max! You're a cute kid!

I read this and the card to Alyssa. She kept saying "gross, boys are so gross". My boys thought Max was the coolest. . Boys and girls are so different.

Good luck with the culture.

Local clinic called me early this morning and said the culture was clear. I indicated I was a bit surprised at the very SHORT timeframe --65 hour turnaround for a CF culture?! The nurse said the doctor told her to call, that this was the final report.

Being the cynic that I am, I'll wait and see what the actual report says. Plus I'm pretty sure the sample collected was spit and nasal mucus.

Hi Liza,

It does take 48 hours to get a preliminary respiratory culture; usually we get our final report in 5 days which includes; the bacteria type and sensitivities. What I have seen on the48 hour report may be "normal flora" if there is absolutely no bug, but Maggie is usually growing something. So the 48 hour report may say staph aureus, but we don't have the sensitivities back. Or it could say gram negative bacteria without sensitivites back yet at 48 hours...

Rarely however, she would have normal respiratory flora, but we never would get a calltil 5 days later; correction I call at 5 days and then they tell me...

Maybe it was normal flora ; that would be good?

How is he feeling?
