The man in the article is from my CF Center. I spoke with my doc yesterday about it.
Katy is right...the reporters often get the facts wrong. Local papers wrote articles about me and screwed information up. They kept saying I was waiting for "the call" from the New England Donor Bank, but it's not the bank that calls, it's your tx center. But, yes, it's getting the point across about organ donation that matters and the publicity helps.
Two strangers offered me their lungs after reading my story and I did tell my CF doc this, wondering if I should ask these people to consider giving to this man instead. It's such an awkward and sensitive subject and after further talk, my doctor decided against it. However, he originally was willing to find out their blood type and speak with them so I think a living donor is still possible. I don't know??
My understanding is that certain regions have access to more lungs than others. New England is limited to VT, CT, MA, NH, RI and Maine. The mid-west and other regions have bigger states and more states that they can receive from. I could be wrong, but I do believe that's why the wait is longer for those of us in the New England region. When someone, like Mike, dual lists, the 2nd tx center is in another region, typically with more supply so his wait time should decrease.
p.s. this man at Mass General has a rare blood type so that is working against him, too.
p.p.s. I emailed the doc who is treating this man from the Herald article as I know the doc well and he is amazing. He's just the most caring doctor. I know he is doing everything possible for this patient.
"Dan and I saw the article in the Herald about the CF man you treat who is critically ill and needs a transplant. I know how hard it must be for you as you are such a loving and caring and dedicated doctor. We're all keeping out fingers crossed that a donor comes through soon. Hopefully the publicity will help."

You are such a dear. What a heart you have. If your fingers matter with the great decision maker, my patient will do just fine.
Love to all of you.
