Bottle feeding

Hi All, everything had been going along pretty smoothly since my granddaughter got out of the hospital a few weeks ago. She is on a continuous feed and is slowly gaining weight. She is almost 6 1/2mos and is almost at 13 lbs. The doctors now want my daughter to try to start bottle feedings so that the G-tube can be used at nitetime. So, since she was in the hospital for over 5mos(since her birth) she wasn't given the bottle after the first few weeks due to problems like infections and whatever, my point is that now she is refusing the bottle. Gags on the nipple, we have even tried a sippy cup but she is alittle behind due to being in the hospital so long.(she has a physical therapist come in to help with her strength especially in her legs, she is trying to roll over be herself now. So my question is does anyone have any ideas that we can try to get her to take the bottle or even the sippy cup. She does spoon feed a small amount(about the size of a medicine cup). We really need to get her to start bottle feeding or something. She is starting to move around alot more now and my daughter wonders how on earth she can keep her on a contineous feed during crawling ect.....any help will be appreciated. She does have a pacifer that she sucks on all the time. They did a swallowing study on her and everything is fine there. She does have acid reflux and they did just raise the meds for that. Sorry so long but i wanted to give you all the information i could.

Have you tried different nipples? My daughter (no CF, but delivered early) would ONLY use the disposable nipples that she used in NICU. It was frustrating, but I just stopped by NICU for a load up or had my clinic get them prior to my check ups.

ANYWAY point being that there are so many nipples to try if you havent. Glad to hear that weight is going on, but I do agree to get her eating on her own & then supplement with the nighttime feeds!

Good Luck!

I have no home-grown ideas, but can you get a referral to another therapist? Not sure if it's a Speech Therapist or Occupational Therapist that would handle that though.

DS had similar issues and I believe we used medium to fast flow silicone nuk nipples with just a regular baby bottle -- nothing fancy. We went thru a LOT of different bottles and a lot of different nipples 'til we found the right combination. However, we STILL had issues with bottle aversion. Not sure if it was reflux, delayed emptying, associating eating with discomfort, my being nervous...

But the best times to feed him were when he was sleeping. We were instructed to feed him every 3-4 hours to regain/keep on the wait he'd lost during his NICU stay. And those late night feedings were so peaceful.
