Breastfeeding and IV's - Anyone done it?

oh - as far as time - well, I was pretty tired on the home IVs - I was on a 7 11 3 11/11 schedule with the two - so I wasn't getting to bed until midnight and then dealing with a nursing baby at night, but my husband was a huge help and I was only on them for 10 days - so it was doable. I admit in the middle I hated it, but...also, one thing about the PICC - I asked specifically for my PICC to be in my left arm as I use my right arm usually to hold the baby and stuff, and was told they "couldn't do it there" I now know this is BS, but I wish I would have fought for that more because I did have some bleeding/soreness from trying to over do it with my PICC arm - so do make sure you get it in the arm you use the least!

The others have given good advice. Here is the link to Dr. Hale's online forum where you can look up most of the meds listed in his book :

Just use the "search" button on the top and put in the drugs you're considering taking.

And like Wanderlost said, IV drugs aren't absorbed orally (well most aren't) and so even if they are in your milk, your LO won't be absorbing them. But I would give you and her some probiotics for the duration of the treatment because you don't want to end up with yeast problems!

Glad to hear an update on you guys. I've been thinking about you often since i will soon be juggling 2 little ones as well!

OH and when you talk to your doctor about doing an IV - since you aren't seriously ill if I were in your shoes I'd demand to do them at home only - no hospital stay. And ask for them to be put in the little balls - can't remember what they're called. It costs more for the insurance company but it is easier for you instead of being attached to a pole.

They're very easy to get the hang of and you'll be fine. I haven't done IVs in 3.5 years so I can't offer any advice on doing them w/ kids. Good luck!
