i have a question for those of you who breastfeed. morgan is one week one day old. i'm trying to hold off introducing a bottle until about three weeks old.

dustin really wants me to pump and fix a few bottles so he can get up and feed her. i'm just scared it will cause nipple confusion. she latches on well but has a little mouth. i think she would prefer a bottle because she wouldn't have to open so wide.

please let me know what yall did and if you think giving her a bottle will confuse her.

thanks - haley

You should really try to wait a bit longer. 4-6 weeks is the ideal time to introduce a bottle, once nursing is FIRMLY established. Tell Dustin he can help in other ways - changing her at night, giving her a bath (or sponge her down - I'm guessing she still has her cord?). Keeping her while you take a nap. I know it can be hard on hubbies who want to be a part of the whole deal and feel sort of left-out and don't know what to do when mom has to do all the feeding, but remind him you are giving her the absolute very best that you can for her and you don't want to take a chance with making it harder. In a few weeks it will all start to sort out and she'll have a bit more of a pattern and you can try having him do a night feeding then without as much worry for nipple confusion.

Some moms have had no problem introducing a bottle. With my son, it ruined our nursing relationship and I wish I never did it. I was very afraid to do give our dd a bottle and actually waited too long (9 weeks) and had trouble with her taking one until she was like 9 months.

I hope that helps. If you need anything else, let me know!

Amelia has had little issue going between breast and bottle. If she latches on to my nipple without opening up enough, I break the seal of her mouth with my finger and wait for her to open up or cry a little so I can shove my nipple into her wide open mouth. It works just fine. For the most part she latches on well without help.

This week she has refused the bottle numerous times wanting to breastfeed, so DH just wakes me up when he is "on duty" if she refuses the bottle. I lay on my side in bed and nurse with her facing me so that I can do it half asleep. Amelia and I fall asleep like that when she finishes nursing, I just roll her on her back if I am awake enough.

I used the bottle with both my sons (One CF and one not CF) right away. They had no problem switching between the two. There are so many nipples out there now that are designed to help with the transition.

I know many people who waited too long or didn't give the bottle enough and their babies refuse to take a bottle at all. It's hard when you have to go back to work and your kid won't eat unless you're there. Every baby is so different. Best of luck- your baby is adorable.
