OK my personal opinion is to wait. She's technically a preemie and you should give it a little more time to get your nursing relationship established. At least another week. Then maybe 1 bottle a day. But I agree with wanderlost that Dustin can help in other ways. He can burp her after her feed, rock her to sleep, etc. I waited too long for Logan (he was probably 2-3 moths old) and then he wouldn't take it so this next one I may try sooner - or I may not. I won't have to go to school so I may just never introduce a bottle. We'll see. But either way, I'd give it a little more time. JMO.

Not sure if you remember or not, but I am a nurse in the newborn nursery and am also trained in helping moms to breast feed. Professionally, I should tell you to wait, but personally, I say go ahead and give the bottle. Just remember that you need to pump everytime she is bottle fed to keep up your milk supply. Your body doesn't know she's taking a bottle, it may just think she missed a feeding and will slow down production. Nathan was a 35 weeker and had no problem going from breast to bottle. He had to stay in the hospital for a week, so I didn't have a choice. Also, he was very tiny (4 1/2 pounds when I brought him home!) and he still did ok. Very rarely have I seen babies have nipple confusion. Are you using a nuk?? If so, that is the same as sucking a bottle. Hope this helps.

hey thanks. i'm going to try to hold off. i pump a little every day because i want to keep my milk supply up and also my boobs get so hard.
i haven't given her a pacifier yet, she doesn't cry really or fuss (knocks on wood) so i have no reason to introduce her to one. if i do end up giving her one the nuk is the brand i have.

Just FYI your supply demand right now should be working itself out. It is ideal (from what my LC's have told me to hold off until around weeks 4 or when you want to introduce the bottle) to start pumping. Technically right now your boobs are hard because you are producing alot, by taking some out the body thinks baby ate that so it will continue to produce that 'extra' thinking it is needed. I hope i explained that ok. I was just told best to wait until BF and supply firmly established then add pumping session after first morning pump when you have the most.

Also, I waited utnil 5 weeks to introduce bottle and plan from there was for hubby to do one a day in evening so I could go walk or go to teh gym and get a break. Lillian did NOT like bottle, we tried 4 bottles and nipples before calling my mom and having her come over-took bottle right away. For some odd reason she didnt like taking bottle for my husband in beginning, every night he would try and every night she would scream for an hour until we gave up. It didnt matter that I was OUT of the house (so she couldnt smell or hear me). He did everythign so nice, gentle, tried using boppy, taking his shirt off, evrything--we worked with LC multiple times. From 5weeks until about 14 weeks this went on. Finally once daycaer 'broke her in' and got bottles well established she was ok with bottles and DH.

Just my experience, I have no idea if she was battling bottles because I waited until 5 weeks but I woudl DEFINATELY have her dislike bottle more than the breast so that is why we waited. My LC's said 4-6weeks.

Also, my advice is have DH get up, get baby, change diaper and bring to you, when you are done he can even burp baby and put her down. No matter how he helps, praise him, let him know he is doign a good job and you appreciate it--EVEN if he doesnt do it the way you woudl like. All of that is so much more helpful IMO than doing a feeding here or there.

best of luck and keep up good work!
