Breathing at night

Hey everyone,

I don't know if anyone has experienced or is experiencing this but I figured I'd give it a shot. I feel like it sounds stupid, bear with me!

I sleep on my side almost all the time. Here's my issue, if I roll over to switch to either my other side or my back I go into a intense coughing fit for at least 5 minutes. It hasn't always been that way, I guess it has been more of a recent development but not that recent, maybe a few months. I never brought it up to the doctor. It is really starting to cut into my sleeping, not to mention being really annoying. Does anyone have this issue too? Anything you do to help it? Any help would be appreciated! Thank youuuu!

Might be junk moving around in your lungs, I sleep on my side to and usually if I sleep on one side for a long time and then lay on the other side I either feel wheezy or like I'm gonna cough. I usually just think of it as everything settles and when I switch to the other side its like everything is moving too. It has gotten worse as my pfts have gotten worse. Have you tried doing a bronchodilator or vest before bed?

yes, I am like the mag165, I used to really notice it b/c i lay on my right side the most and I would alwways cough upon moving, but normally I just had one or two big mucussy coughs.

Oxygen I ntoiced makes it worse. To where I always wake up at least once or twice in the middle of the night to cough up a glob of mucus, my doc said its frmo the oxygen i guess. But again, just a few coughs, not normally a fierce coughign fit.

I have/had a pneumothorax that was giving me sleeping/coughing problems like you are describing though. I didnt have pain with the pneumo, but I just felt rattly and couldnt get it out and it made me feel like I had to cough.

not saying you have a pneumo though haha

but yea, probably just signs of progressing lung disease... do you sleep inclined at all?

I as well sleep on my left side my better side, the oxygen will get me coughing mins after I put on the tubing I get out abt 1/3 cup of a 5oz wax dixie cup then I get setteled and am able to fall asleep. When I think of all that comes up during the day then that last big cough, I think will it ever stop producing, it's simply amazing to me at times. The bad thing is if my husband starts to cough I tell him you have to get up you are keeping me awake HAHA I have alot of nerve for sure. Pat-56/CF

My 11 dd coughs up mucus several times a day, then at night as soon as she lays down she coughs up mucus then she will wake up several times during the night to clear out the mucus and in the morning when she first gets up. My question is....Is this "normal cf mucus" or a sign she is getting an "flare up"??? Her cf clinic nurse always tells me she should not be coughing up any mucus... but thats what CFers do right always have mucus???

Any time I wake up during the night I tend to go into a coughing fit. So it's probably just the fact that you're waking up, taking deeper breaths, and getting stuff moving in there. I don't think it's all that uncommon.

Thank you all for your responses! It all has definately made me feel a lot better. I guess it is just things getting a little worse.

LostMiler- I do sleep on a slight incline, it helps sometimes but lately nothing seems to help when I turn to my other side.

I was never on oxygen before, my doctor never thought I should be. I really think I need to get a new PFT though because lately I've been so out of breath so quickly and there is no exacerbations or anything going on. I had sinus surgery the first week of November and I have been feeling well since then. I've never realized how many people are on oxygen. What lead to anyone going on?
