Hi! I am an adult w/CF, diagnosed at 30 years old. I am exploring wholistic health practices to helpmanage the CF and heard about bromelain. Do you use it? Does it work? If so, what brand do you use? Thanks for reading <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Hi Amy

great question, I would be interested to see others responses. Bromelain would be great for us in theory as it has high antibacterial and anti inflamatory properties. The problem arises in the interaction it has with other drugs. I am not sure exactly why but it changes the bodys absorbtion of many drugs including antifungals and antibiotics. It is found naturally in fruits such as the core of pineapple and grapefruits and for this reason many drugs companies warn against taking medications with these products and they are banned in some drug studies. As I said I would be interested to see if anyone has successfully used it though.

I agree with the previous post. There just isn't enough data out there to support some of these holistic treatments. Take some of the cases recently, like curcumin. They found it reduced inflammation in mice. Everybody jumped on the bandwagon, until they found out that it took ridiculous amounts to do any good and I think there was a study that linked it to certain types of cancer. You really have to do your homework and keep a skeptic's eye when trying this stuff out.

Thanks for the insight! I had no idea pineapple interferes with medication. I've been trying to eat a lot of pineapple for the bromelain. I think I'll cut back.
