It used to be diagnosed thru bronchography and clinically.
These days if a young person has a "stable" dx (one that doesn't "reverse" after a year or so after having pneumonia) should always prompt genetic testing for CF.
Back in the bad old days when you were a kid (and when my late husband was a kid) that wasn't the case.
