ugh...know exactly how you feel!!!!and it's frustrating b/c the doctors i am dealing with out here think cough syrup is like the devil and the doctors at Johns hopkins where i used to go would prescribe me cough syrup w/ hydrocodone in it...that has been the only thing that has ever worked and stopped me from coughing when i get that unproductive, tickle, won't go away cough.
If I do take cough syrup, I usually wake up feeling a little bit tight in the chest so I will do a double treatment of albuterol to open the airways up in the morning...sometimes you just need that night for your throat and airways to calm down and reduce the inflamation...when I get like that I usually try and blow my nose every few minutes to make sure its not post nasal drip, sleep propped up or on the cough so i can actually lean forward. Alot of people on this board find eating something salty helps. Ice water doesn't work for me... I will ususally make tea and suck on cough drops. sometimes drinking a beer helps... if all else fails i must admit, I will drink a solid half bottle of cough syrup b/c just taking a tsp doesn't do crap.... I would have to advice against mixing alcohol and sleeping pills though... those usually don't mix well together... but drinking a bottle of cough syrup prob isn't either... oh wel.... call your doc and see if he'll hook you up with some fun cough syrup!!
