They are doing phase 3 trials at our clinic. Kj was asked to do the trial but as we have to travel and it is a committment of about 2 years and seeing various other docs (not kj's ones) and monthly clinic visits.

I decided that I just couldn't afford it <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0">

Sounds promising though <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I have been following this one for a while. It seems promising. What I like about it is it is a dry powder that you inhale, so it should be fast to administer. Here is what it does: Bronchitol is thought to increase mucus clearance by the following mechanisms:
It changes the viscosity of mucus, making it easier to clear
It mimics the action of salt in healthy lungs to draw water out of the cells and into the airway surface liquid
The restored airway surface liquid and a direct action on the cilia themselves cause an increase in cilia effectiveness
It stimulates cough (a normal and natural lung clearing mechanism)

"The medication to be trialled is inhaled mannitol (IDPM) which thins lung mucus and is hoped to make physiotherapy more effective by helping the mucus to be coughed up more easily. It is an alternative to hypertonic saline. Mannitol is a naturally occcuring sugar found in fruit and vegetables and has been used as a food sweetener for many years."

I will ring the hospital up for more detailed info and will post it when I receive it.

Thanks Sean, that is how i sort of understood it as well.

Mum2kj - Thanks for adding that extra bit of info. That was the reason the drug was able to be fast tracked, because most of it is made up of a natural occuring sugar. I guess its seen as a more natural type of med, for that particular reason.

Anyway, it does seem very promising and i have high hopes it will/should come onto the market in the next 3-5yrs.<img src="i/expressions/rose.gif" border="0">
