Hi Carly,
Sorry that you are back in the hospital. I've had a couple of bronchoscopies. You shouldn't know a thing when they do the procedure because they will sedate you. It's been awhile, but I remember coughing up a ton of mucus afterwards because they are moving alot of things around down there.
I hope it goes well for you and that it helps the doctors to better treat you.

I had a Bronch done in December, I don't remember anything because I was already on a vent, I was so glad they did it because they found bacteria in my lungs that I had never been able to produce on my own with a sample. They took that sample and sent it off for synergy testing because it is pan resistant.

You most likely won't remember anything.. I am sorry you have to worry about if Cepecia is down in your lungs, I pray it isn't and that you get good results.

Carly - so sorry to hear you are in the hospital. I've had a couple of bronchocospiesr, the most recent was in December while in the hospital. I honestly don't remember a thing - and it does help you cough productively and breathe easier. I'm also scheduled for one this Friday on an outpatient basis (I'll be thinking of you. As the others say, they really sedate you so you don't remember anything. Good Luck and wishing you good results. Susan

The 2 times I've had bronchs done I've had interesting experiences, but love them all the same. The 1st time I felt like I'd been hit by a truck afterwards in my chest, but it was a thorough cleaning. I also bit down on the scope (equals more anesthetic=headache for 3 days). The 2nd time I wasn't sore at all, and actually DENTED the scope from biting so hard. Obviously it takes a ton of anesthetics to knock my butt out.

Overall, enjoy because you feel soooo clear afterwards

I've always wanted to ask my doctor for a tape of the procedure to watch afterwards.... it'd be kinda cool!

I've had a few bronchs done, mine were a little different as I already have a trach, so that's where they went down with mine. I was also lightly sedated, but remember everything (don't worry, not too bad). The nebbed some lidocaine prior to the bronch so that my lungs would be numb which worked great. I am sure that they didn't sedate me the traditional way as the trach isn't like going down the nose or throat where there is a gag reflex. I actually watched mine on the video while they did it! You will be sedated so that you don't remember it though so don't worry I did run a bit of a fever, which I am told is fairly common as well as coughed up a ton of stuff. While down there, they lavaged me with tons of normal saline to loosen things up...they did what is called a theraputic lavage as well as collect some samples from my lower lobes. They found bugs that I normally wouldn't culture with the traditional sputum so I am glad that they did it. They did this because I was constantly getting sick and the IV's were doing nothing. Turned out that I did indeed have steno as well as cepacia which was missed (I had grown it prior to this, but thought that it was gone because my cultures were coming up negative), but thankfully with the right antibiotics, I got better. I pray that they figure you out as well, I also hope that cepacia isn't in the picture again, if it is, then at least they will be able to get you on the proper combo of drugs and hopefully you will feel better. Sending many prayers and hugs, Jenn 40 w/CF

My son is 27 and has never had one. I wonder why they have never done one before....It sounds like it would help clean up the lungs.....Is there a criteria they use?

i don't mean to be negative and scare you, but i did NOT have a good experience w/ my first (ever) bronch last July! however, i cannot say whether it was the bronch itself or maybe a combination of many things as that was just a horrible hospital admission PERIOD...

i was fully sedated during my procedure and do not remember it at all. what i do remember is having a nasty couple days afterward. most of it's a blur now, but i know i had trouble w/ sats being way low and even having to go on bi-pap (for the first time ever as well)! there was also an error on the intern or on-call doc's part in which he gave me way too high a dosage of Atavan, even AFTER i told him exactly how much they usually give me to take the edge off my anxiety, that happened kind of in the same time frame so that very well could have been what did it. anyway, it was a very unpleasant experience for me but not necessarily one that i would refuse in the future either since there were many things going on kind of simultaneously. oh...and they didn't find anything additional from the bronch than they knew before...

on a lighter note, i also had my first ever embolization that admission that went beautifully! they found a vessel that was bleeding, therefore causing my hemoptysis, plugged it and i've been doing well since :)
