Bronchoscopy questions.

DS is going in for a bronchoscopy and lavage and sinus ct tomorrow and I was hoping anyone with a child that has been through this could help calm my nerves. I don't know why I'm such a mess this time, but I feel like I'm on the verge of an anxiety attack. I didn't get this nervous with the upper and lower endoscopies or either of his hernia surgeries. Although he's 6 years old, he's still my little baby. Watching him sleep last night, I couldn't believe how little he still looks and so angelic. I hate that he has to go through any of this, but count my blessings as it could be much worse. The bronchoscopy is taking place in the PICU, is that standard procedure? The endoscopies and hernia surgeries didn't. How long does it take before you get the results back to see if they are culturing anything? His dr. wants to test because of his chronic cough and the fact that we can't seem to get rid of it with regular antibiotics. Thanks so much everyone.

Are you anxious about the procedure or about the results? A bronchoscopy is pretty easy peasy as far as surgery goes. Alyssa has had two. I hate seeing my kid go for anesthesia, but these were the easiest two for her.

As for what it means, I hear you if you are anxious regarding that. I hope they can figure out the cough and get him the right meds.

my little one had a bronch/lung lavage last summer and it went very smooth...they did it in the o.r. not the picu...but she seemed to not have any difficulty afterward and we went home 4 days later on iv antibiotics. i think it took 3 or 4 days to find out what was being cultured, but i cant really remember! try not to worry!!

My son who is also 6 is going for his 7th sinus surgery and 3rd bronch on Friday. The bronchs have been easy so far. Try not to worry too much, it is very quick and my son had no rxn. His sinus surgeries last 3 hours and he has to get a breathing tube--that worries me. Best of luck!

Hi there

Sophie has just had her first bronch (last Friday) i've wrote about some of it on our blog if you want to check it out. We are also currently doing home iv's. The bronch itself is really straightforward, Sophs was done in a theatre right next to picu also.

Hope it all goes smoothly.

I hope it all went well for you. Like you, I was a basket case before my daughter's first sinus surgery and bronch. The bronch was a piece of cake. The doctor was out in 15 minutes with her update for me. The sinus surgery took longer, but there was more to do. She has had two sinus surgeries and 4 or 5 bronchs since then and the process has been pretty much the same. It seems that we got the preliminary culture results in a couple of days.

Just a note - I always call or email to check on the status of the culture results. The one time that I didn't -- the doctor said he would call if anything icky grew - it turned out that nothing grew at all because they had lost the specimen.

Good luck.

Good luck! bronchoscopy is also done often here - although I don't know when it's being prescribed - sometimes it looks like without no need - A friend here has the same problem with her 2 year old.
Also - every mom (afterwards) says it was no problem. From what I read from her my Joanna should have had one done too but the doc said that there was need and just gave us bactrim.
I always try ask for details why - but this time I let go - I wish I hadn't now.
I guess I left it for after our Zuzanna shows up I'm ancious about this and about her genetic test after birth - but I have to wait just a bit longer.

I got the results from our year cheque up - and nothing changed not even in the lungs.
In about 3 - 4 month we are to change the salline to 7% and the CPT method - maybe we'll get some accapella also...the doc said so.
Hope it goes all goes well.
