Bronchoscopy

I had swine flu in October/November of last year and haven't felt IMO 100% since then.

I suffered my first case of hemoptysis in over 6 months when I got swine flu and since then I've had consistent bleeds. As of late it's just been the odd blood streaked mucous, but tonight I had a good old fasioned bleed.

Anyways my doctor told me if I wanted I could go in for a Bronchoscopy to see if they could find what is causing the bleeding, etc.

Is there any concerns I should know about this procedure, as I'm going to call tomorrow to book it most likely.

He also mentioned something about washing out the lungs with saline... what's that called and any opinions on that as well?

I also started NAC just last Monday... I wonder if that could be doing anything?

I'm sorry to hear that the swine flu got you and you're not back to 100%!

I can't help with the hemo because I've never had any personal experience with it. I also don't know much about NAC, so not really much help there either <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0">

As far as the bronch goes I have had a couple. When they use the saline they call it "lavage". They basically just squirt a small amount of saline to help move mucus and then suck it out. So the procedure would be called bronchoscopy with lavage.

I have a couple personal concerns with bronchs. It's pretty invasive with a foreign object going into your lungs so there's an inherent risk of new bacteria/infection being introduced. Also, sedation/anesthesia is used which always makes me nervous.

With that being said, I chose to go ahead and have them in order to try to figure out what was really going on down there. I recovered easily and didn't have any complications from them. Unfortunately with me, they didn't see anything I wasn't already culturing, so it didn't really give us any additional information. My doctor did, however, say that there was a lot more mucus than he expected to see.

I think they can be an effective diagnostic tool, if other less invasive methods are not giving us any answers.
