Bronchoscopy

Can someone please fill me in on what exactly they look for in a Bronchoscopy? Holly had one & the dr left me a vm & basically just said she has some sever inflamation & some mild inflamation. He also said that she had a thick film substance present in the tissue (maybe misunderstood by me) or I think that's what I heard. I am going to call & actually talk to him hopefully next week after the holiday but I thought you can tell everything he just told me from an x-ray or scan so what would be the point of the bronchoscopy tha't more invasive?

A bronch just gives them a better look at what is there. On x-rays areas appear cloudy, but its hard to tell if its scar tissue or infection or other stuff.

Yeah the bronch is just a much better vision of what is going on. I hope that the voicemail will be better explained to you and that they have a good plan to help Holly.

Hi Bobbi,

Yes, the bronch is a much better view of what is happening. But it is also an opportunity to obtain a sputum sample if they find any buildup. I remember at age 5 my son could not always cough up his own mucus. So, throat swabs in clinic were not a definitive answer of what was growing down there. A bronchoscopy allows docs to take a sample right from the lungs and test it so they will know if Holly is growing anything that does not show up on her throat culture. I'm not sure when you had the bronch done, but results usually take a few days because they run the tests to also check for resistancies to meds so that if they have to treat an infection, they know they are treating it with something that will work.
Good luck!
