Bronchs?

As I was reading Megans thread about her little one's bronch, and some of the responses, it dawned on me that I have heard/read of many kiddos/adults having one done.

My girls have never had one done on them. I wonder why not. It's this something that is normally done at some clinics. I think my nephew has only had one or two over the years.

I know our dr. has said that he feels they are intrusive and only thinks they should be done when they are ill and they cannot determine the cause, such as cultures not showing anything.

Just curious as to why so many seem to have bronchs. Were your children really sick, or was it just routine?

Hi Tammy,

I think each clinic has their own philosophy about the bronch. Our local clinic does not seem to do them. Maggie did have one bronch when she was 2 1/2 because she was having a tough time respiratory wise. This CF doc was very aggressive. He was my second opinion. He thought she might be culturing something not caught on a throat swab and wanted to make sure they were not missing something. She was not culturing something they missed but they were able to see she had alot of inflammation in her airway and she ended up started Pulmicort nebs which she is still on. It is invasive and they give you a run down of the risk involved including picking up a new bacteria from having the bronch done. So, she's just had it done once thus far.

Alyssa had a bronch because she wasn't gaining weight and they couldn't figure out why: she wasn't culturing anything, she's pancreatic sufficient and still on plenty of enzymes, tested for celiacs, etc. So they thought that possibly she was culturing somehting they were missing -- but nope, the bronch was clear.

I don't think of a bronch as routine CF care, just diagnostic for when you need to seek solutions OR as procedural .

In the case of my son he kept getting sick despite taking his meds, antibiotics, etc. He cultured MRSA in his sputum, but the pulm thought it was a bad sample. He decided to do the bronch to sample the mucus in the lung and to check damage.
