Bronchs?

My doctor feels that bronchs should be avoided unless absolutely necessary. It is one of the main ways to acquire Pseudomonas and other life-threatening bacterias. You will notice most people, as evident with the people posting above, the bronch did not pick up anything that a culture didn't show. And the bronchs showed inflammation which of course is not a surprise. I don't think it is worth the risk of Pseudomonas (I have it), or Cepacia which is a lifetime of trouble. In addition, unfortunately, there are doctors that use unncessary bronchs to make a lot of money.

I would always ask a doctor if it is absoulutely necessary to do a bronch. I would ask to repeat a culture and send it to one of those superlabs. CT scans also give an amazing picture. And with symptoms that persist like nasal congestion and constant exacerbations, I would start treating the asthma/allergy/irritant component that affects most people with CF.

Bronchs are not routine (or should not be) at clinics because they can be grounds for infection. All of the CFers who I know and have had a bronch have only had it if they were sick and the docs couldn't figure it out or have had them post Tx to test for rejection.

I never had a bronch until after my transplants. They had suggested doing one not too long before but decided against doing it because of the risk of infection and causing a collapsed lung. Since the Tx, I have had 7 bronchs to test for rejection and to look at the connection site for the donor lungs to me, but that's the only reason I have ever had them.

Hi Tammy. Aidan has had two but for pretty good reason.
He had a persistent cough for over a month and only his usual Staph was growing from the sputum. Extra treatments and meds were not working at all. It just got worse, he could hardly breathe. They thought maybe a fungus. It turned out to be nothing in the end except major crap dripping from his sinuses into his lungs. His lungs were filled with the nasal stuff. Zithromax cleared it, I've demanded Zithromax M/W/F since then.

Recently he cultured the MRSA and they wanted a pure sample before treating it. He is getting a port in two weeks and wanted to know better what IVs to do. He isn't sick but they won't do the sinus surgery without IVs first.
