Hi,

Just wondering if anyone has tried Buteyko breathing it's a breathing technique that is suposed to help people with Astma and other breathing problems. I was watching a health programe on TV and there was a girl that had CF and she was thought the technique and it improved her quality of life and helped her cut down on the amount of Vent she used. The amount of infections she got were greatly reduced as well!!

Might be worth looking into.

The program was called Health squad you might be able to youtube it.

YES YES YES TRY IT. There is a great book out on this too.

I feel that it did increase my oxygenation when I was waiting for my second transplant. I actually followed the advice in the book and taped my mouth up at night so I would breathe through my nose instead.

I was always losing CO2 and when you breathe through your mouth you lose so much more then when you breathe through your nose. It is healthier to breathe through your nose but some people have to breathe whatever way is comfortable for them.

Many do not pay attention to how they breathe.

This is a good breathing technique and if you can practice the holding breaths and all they recommend, you will see improvements.

I also feel this technique along with energy medicine techniques helped me to reduce my oxygen intake. I went from four liters down to 1.5 before my transplant. It was the energy medicine that was able to cut the use down quickly but with the tape over my lips at bedtime, I feel this kept my breathing more regular. I would not wake up with headaches that I would frequently have.

GOOD LUCK

I just wanted to add another comment. If you are a CO2 retainer, I am not sure how this technique will help you. I do not remember reading about C02 retainers in the book and I gave the book away to someone.

The focus on the book was to teach the patient to conserve their CO2. They said there was a natural bronchodilator in C02 which is obvious if we need Co2 to breathe properly.

When I was waiting for my transplant with CF lungs, I was a bigtime C02 retainer. I was able to reduce my Co2 by learning how to breathe in through my nose and out through my mouth.

With my second transplant, I had the opposite in lung disease. I would lose lots and lots of Co2 and I figured it out after a few weeks that the more oxygen I would take in (thinking I need more than I did) the more I thought I need, the worse I felt. My sats would decrease with more oxygen. Then when I was able to reduce the oxygen by buteyko and energy medicine holding sedating lung points, I was able to reduce my intake greatly.

It is hard to say but I think there are always many variables that can improve your situation. I do credit my better breathing to sleeping well at night because of the tape.

I am glad that I saw this post because I woke up this morning breathing through my mouth. I am going to start using the tape again.

I do remember in the book Buteyko said (I read this somewhere) that your lungs will be much healthier when you learn how to breathe properly because the gas exchanges will not be off balanced as greatly as with severe lung disease.

I think I am going to buy the book again. It is good to practice the control breathing. I am going to see if I can find this online. I remember learning just as much online as I did from the book. I think I learned about the tape in the book. It has been over two years since i read it.

This lady is a RT and teaches Buteyko in the usa in ohio.

There are very few buteyko teaches in the usa.

I believe when we cough and sing we lose CO2 that is probably why the autogenic drainage works wonders. Less coughing and more mobilizing of secretions.
