Call in a script

Like Sharon, I have never called the CF clinic for a cold/cough. I'm not saying that you shouldn't have. You know your child best. But I can honestly say that it has never crossed my mind to put Danny (or the other two kids) on antibiotics for a cold. There have been a few bad colds but I have always just taken the wait and see approach, with increased CPT, and he has always gotten over them on his own. Until reading posts on this site I never knew that docs would be so quick to give antibiotcs for this type of thing. Do your CF docs instruct you to call anytime there is a cough/cold? Even if everyone else in your house has it and its just clearly a cold?

Well, I called to get advice, not a script.  Its her first
cough ever.  Before CF, with my boys, I'd have just waited it
out, gave them some Delsym for the cough and ran the humidifier.
But I was told NOT to do those things with her.  So I
wanted to just touch base.  The other thing is that this is
not a cold, JUST a cough.  Granted, whatever it is I have the
same thing.  But neither of us had a runny nose or any other
cold symptoms, just right to a chest cough.    I
really didn't expect to be given 21 day course of antibiotic, I
expected them to say increase postural drainage and wait 3-5 days,
then call back.

I wanted to add what my docs office reccomended for me and our family when I was younger. If there was anything going on with me that my parents thought may be something more than "normal" they were told to feel free to call the docs office.

Often times with me a head cold that is passed around the house turns into much more than a head cold for me. Even if I increase other meds I would have a head cold for a few days but it always turned into a chest thing as well.

With any type of viral infection it isn't the viral infection that they worry about so much - as antibiotics don't treat viruses they just have to run their course. They worry mainly about a follow up bacterial infection or flare up. It is different for each patient though - some kids do fine others have problems more often with the "normal head cold". I know for me I can normally keep from getting whatever it is for a few weeks - but once I catch it I have it pretty bad. I normally always call the doc and either ask to be seen or ask for antibiotics to tide me over until I can be seen in office if I notice any difference in the way I feel.

Heather,

Perhaps you took my post the wrong way? I was not, in any way, questioning why you did what you did. I was just trying to find out if the majority of parents/CFers get put on meds every time they have a cough. If I offended you I am sorry, that was not my intention.

NO Nicole, I was not offended.  I'm just so new at this CF
thing and I am questioning myself all the time.  Any
defensiveness is because I'm trying to figure this all out -- I
just lack the confidence in this that I have in the rest of my
life.  I appreciate your input!!

Locally when I call if I"m concerned DS has a cough -- which is rarely, so I KNOW he's got something when it's a junky chesty sounding cough -- I'm told not to worry about it CFers cough. Our CF doctor in the City has told us to "learn to know the difference in coughs" and should DS develop one, has a few different antibiotics to try. Last spring after the local clinic told me it was nothing, we had an appointment with the CF doctor in the City a few days later. DS got put on Cipro for a couple of weeks. Guess I'd be more apt to fill the script being that when DS gets a junky cough, it's not going to go away on its own despite increased beatings.

Our CF doctor in the City would prefer we call. With his upper respiratory bug, it was the kind of junky, thick cough that was really wearing DS down. And being that our doctor is also an infectious disease specialist, I'm willing to fill a script.
