How many of you have CFRD? My 6 yr old gets tested on the 29th. How old were you when you were diagnosed with it? What things do you do to control it? Any other information is appreciated.

hey there...
I was diagnosed a year ago with cfrd (age 21). The best thing to do to keep it under control is check sugars often. Some may suggest cutting out candy, soda, and other carbs, but I was told not to even think about doing that since we cfers still need the weight. I got used to drinking diet sodas just because that was something I wanted to do before I became diabetic. Since your child who may have it is only 6 years old, I suggest keeping on eye on the sugars when it comes to activity...activity can increase the chances of a low blood sugar. Hope this helps and that you don't have to worry about cfrd just yet.

I'm 41 and developed (type 1) diabetes at age 17.
In case you don't know:
Type 1 is Insulin Dependant - You can't use pills and diet alone (portion control), you must use insulin.
In Type 2 diabetes, your body makes insulin but is having a hard time using it. I'm not sure how they treat type 2 in a child. (pills, or just in the diet alone?)

I don't have a insulin pump, but I use the same type insulins which allows me to Carb Count, thereby allowing me to eat as much as I want - which is what CFers need.
Balanced meals, and exercise are important to level blood sugars. With a balanced meal you would eat a balance of Proteins, Carbs and Fat. Carbs raise the blood sugar first, then the proteins kick in, then the fats.
With the Carb Counting insulins, it is possible to still eat Simply sugars (soda, juice, candy bar), however it needs to be Within the meal, not alone.

If you son does have diabetes, your CF center will provide the dr's that will teach you both what you need to know.
I hope the information we provide can help you and best wishes <img src="i/expressions/heart.gif" border="0">

I've had diabetes for 27 years now and once you get the hang of things, it gets easier to deal with. I am on Humulin NPH which is a long acting insulin and i also take regular whenever i need it. I decided not to go on the newer insulins that you have to carb count ....basically because i have my method pretty much down to a science. I got diabetes at age 15 and it was kind of hard on me at that time since i LOVE sweets, but as my doctor said waaaay back then you just have to figure out a way to factor them in. I check my blood sugars very often ( about 8 - 10 times per day) which helps me to keep things in check. Hopefully your son wont have diabetes, and this is just a precaution. If the time ever comes that he does develop diabetes, you can go to classes to learn more about diabetes and how to control it. Learning as much as you can about it will help you to learn how to control it and feel better.
