Hi Dads,

My precious hubby is taking our little one to a clinic appointment in November by himself. He's totally capable, but he's interested in knowing if there are any helpful hints you could share with him since I'm the one that normally takes her. He's been once or twice, but we've had both girls with us, so he hasn't had the luxury of just focusing on the wee-one.

Moms can contribute, too, but I didn't know (and he didn't) if there is more to think about or be prepared for since he isn't the usual parent to go AND he's flying solo with a cutie co-pilot!

Thanks!

Make sure to take insurance cards-- where we go you have to show them each time and I always take a list of questions I have for the doctor, etc., May want to take a notebook to write weight, height down for mom or anything else the doctor may mention.

Take toys for the little one, hand sanitizer, diaper bag, etc.,

Me to husband: "OK, think back to the first time you took Emily to clinic without me. What did you wish you had remembered to bring?"

Husband: "You."

Awwwwww. Sweet!

When pushed a little, he advised bringing lots of snacks and toys becasue its often harder for him to keep her busy and entertained that it is for me. Be prepared to hold her and keep her on your lap and away from "clinic germs." A notebook with mom's questions listed on the first page and a space to scribble in answers to each (with the hand that's not holding kiddo).

I packed the diaperbag, notebook, enzymes, etc. that first time. I packed up everything I would have needed or wanted if I were going. So, he had everything, but didn't know he had it because we hadn't gone through the bag together. He wished he had an extra sippy cup, and didn't ralize there was one in the bag. Same with sanitizer. It was there all along. So, my advice is, give him a little tour of the bag before he sets off.

Once or twice we have also arranged for him to call me on my cell during the last 10 minutes of the appointment. I get a chance to talk to the doc and I can answer Q's that came up that he didn't have answers for. But, he usually has the answers, so It's reallly more for my piece of mind. I have trouble not being there.

Good luck Dad! Let us know how it goes.

Hand santizer/wipes and a reminder to USE them at the clinic and when they get back to the car.
Backpack with juice, toys, snacks, books, enzymes (if needed) -- Portable DVD player was a lifesaver for lengthy appointments.
List of medications 'cuz the nurse always asks/goes thru them.
The running list of questions that I always have attached to the drug list -- I also mention concerns we may have the night or morning before the appointment as a refresher.
Reminder to remember or write down height/weight and/or growth percentile.

Last time at DS's well child appointment I told DH that I WISHED he'd gone along with me 'cuz the doctor was being such a jerk -- wasn't one of those nice, feel good appointments. Instead he was trying to find fault with practicially everything we were doing, even though DS was doing quite well, so DH's Sarcastic wit would've come in VERY handy.
