Weight gain wise .... is it better to have more fat or protein...or is it just the calories that affects the weight gain?
We are adding an extra 80 calories to his snack time and he is very tired of pecans and i am sure string cheese is going to get tiresome also!!!

blessings,
missa

Fat packs more into a much smaller package (9 calories per gram vs. 4 calories per gram of carbs or protein), so sometimes it's easier to get more calories into our kids when they have trouble eating a large volume of food. However... something like applesauce is also very easily absorbed, and if he loves it and will scarf it down, I can't see how it wouldn't be just as good for him if it matches the calories of the other stuff. If it's something our kids will eat and nutritious to boot- I say go for it.

Sometimes the high calorie/small portion idea doesn't work for Emily because the food ends up being too rich and fills her up very quickly so we have to mix things up frequently to figure out what will work.

I once read an article that talked about how juice leads to childhood obesity. So I try to make sure I give DS some white grape juice once in awhie instead of the water he always requests. I also send fruit snacks with him to church with grandma. He'll easily eat three packages at 80 calories a pop.

If it's a matter of getting to him eat applesauce vs. being tired of something and not eating -- I'd go for the applesauce.

Currently DS snack choice is roasted sunflower nuts. I've been going thru about 2 jars a week.

After catching Emily eating the jelly straight out of the jar more than once with a spoon I've found an easy way to get an extra 100 calories into her by letting her have a huge soup spoon of jelly once I've made her sandwich. She also loves lemon curd on bagels and toast- tastes just like the filling in lemon meringue pie & they sell it with the jelly; I don't know why they call it 'curd'- and it is higher in calories than many jellies.

I try to give her juice too but other than an occasional small cup of OJ it's a no go; she hates other juices, and refuses to drink nearly all of those capri-sun/fruit punch drinks as well as soda. (I'd love it if the boys hated all those sugar water concoctions!) All she wants is water or milk. Under normal circumstances- a wonderful thing! But we often really need ways to pump in some unnoticeable calories...
